air filter housing 1 Year, 1 Month ago

Ok, I'm sure I'll the prize for the stupid question of the week....but how does the air filter housing come off? I've searched the forum, and I looked in the service manual.....it seems as if all I need to do is remove the center bolt and the big egg shaped metal piece will come off revealing the air filter.
But it doesn't come off. The bottom is loose, I can stick my fingers into the bottom and feel something rattling around in there, and now the long bolt won't screw in to anything.
If I take off the 2 bolts at the top and the one at the bottom, it still does not come off. I can't see how to access the clamp that must hold it to the carb.
I'm feeling pretty stupid....as I just finished servicing the steering head bearings...but I can't figure this out. thanks in advance....

After you do Rev.'s #1 and #2, the filter should come away from the carb. Should be two hoses attached to the back of the filter housing. Disconnect them. I leave the short hose attached to the back of the filter housing and remove it from the carb, and the long one pulls off of the filter housing and hangs.
When the filter is off the bike, then you can remove the 5mm allen head in the center of the chrome cover, and there are two phillips head screws from the back side(facing the carb), that release the front chrome cover.

Figgered out why the center bolt wouldn't screw back in...the plastic nut holder thingy has broken off and was what I could feel inside the housing.
How would you go about repairing that? I'm thinking of trying JBWeld or epoxy to re-secure the nut that is trapped in the plastic back to where it's supposed to be.
Another repair for it would be to put on a different sort of air cleaner, right? can you make suggestions? thanks

I'm sure somebody could offer up a stock one, since many have replaced it...
BAK might require rejetting, though.
