sputtering and very thirsy 12 Months ago
ok, so i just picked up an 01 R*, and am starting to come across some issues. first off gas mileage is awful. like in the 20's. this weekend i changed the oil, filter, plugs, and recharged the K&N air filter. today i went on about a 200 mile ride, and when i was in the interstate, the bike started to sputter at about 75 mph, with black smoke coming out of the exhaust. i'm not to motorcycles, so any hep would be greatly appreciated. i don't know the condition of the carb, or if they're even stock or not, and i don't know how the previous owner took care of the bike, i just poured some seafoam in it so see if that will clear it up, but i won't have a chance to run it with it in due to storms on their way in. thanks for any advice on where to start

Looks like your going to have to break into that carb and take a look. Sounds like a jetting issue...too rich. No way should you be in the 20s. Do you have the K&N filter in the stock air box? Or a BAK type? Which pipes do you have? Slip on cobras?

Opps...should have looked at your pic...b.a.k. going to have to check your jetting. Something isn't right

You are too rich. The air filter is the Yamaha plate so you may have a K&N that replaces the OEM paper filter. It flows better than the OEM paper but not as good as some of the after market ones. It is possible not one has been in the carb yet so you may have to pull it off and open it up. You are headed in the right direction with all that you have done the seafoam will help but not cure the problem. Also check the tech atricles on the choke knob trim you should do that regardless.

At worst youll need a jet kit. Can u see if the 4 screws at the bottom of the float bowl are allen head or phillips type?
If thier allen head its probably been messed with before. Most people change the screws cause the stock (phillips head) ones strip out easy.

Hey Curt.....
This is probably a dumb question, but as I understand it, the K&N gets cleaned and oiled with a filter solution. So is it possible to over-oil the K&N filter enough to restrict air flow? The intake hole on the stock air box ain't all that big.
