Technical Discussion on the Pros and Cons of a BAK 11 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I hear a lot about and see a lot of them installed but don't really fully understand the pros and cons of installing a BAK. I've heard about an increase in power and enhanced performance/response (please, no smiling Bob jokes). I also understand that rejetting is required.

If doing nothing else, what kind of percentage increase in power are we talking about? Are there other pros/cons in day to day care and feeding?

Not sure about the % of gain but it does make a difference. I had one before after I took my HC off and sold it. It is a much better air filter but I got rid of it too because I was tired of it getting scratched up. I went with what you see now the BAK is around $250 and is about 54 sq in's the one I have now cost me $45 and the price has dropped to $28 where I buy them and it is around 58 sq in's. You can buy a lot of them for $250. Here is where I buy mine.

I road home in a downpour a couple of years ago that filled the road to the top of the gutters. It was up to my floor boards and I couldn't see 50 yards. The bike finally started spitting and sputtering after about 3 miles but I managed to make it home the other 3 miles. You will have the rain problem with any open air filter I usually just pull into a station and wait till it quits but that time I was in the boonies.

Ive heard people have problems in the rain...Ive run thru a couple big rains in the last few years ...never had a problem. I was waiting for it to act up but it didnt. Ran smooth the whole time. I carry a shower cap in the bags for when I wanna wash it though.
Mine was stock when I bought it...dont know the actual % difference but I could really tell how much better it ran after I installed it. Throttle response was so much better.

Rain sock for when its sitting out in the rain.

I've got a thunder BAK and have ridden in some FROG CHOKERS. Long as the bike is running... you should have no problem.

Now if you are "in for the night" and its raining... you need a rain sock to keep the filter from being clogged with water.

That is all.

Curt,
Did you have to make brackets for that filter?

Yes I did they are nothing but a couple of pieces of aluminum flat bar 1/8" x 1" x however long you want them. You bolt them to the back of the filter rubber with some screws and fender washers.

So to summarize:

Pros
Increase in horsepower
Increase in throttle response

Fact
Must rejet the carb

Cons
May have issues with water. More likely when standing still or washing.
