Knocking in Yamaha Roadstar 2 Years, 9 Months ago
I recently purchased a new Yamaha roadstar silverado, 1700. It has logged around 140 miles. I'm starting to worry about a knocking noise that I believe comes from the engine. It only happens when the engine is hot (after about 25 minutes on). I have only added fuel once to the tank and I used premium gas.
The sound is similar to a diesel engine knock. The sound starts when I accelerate and then stops as the engine RPM increases. There is no noise at idle. While cruising it does not make the noise until I add a little gas to keep the speed. Has anyone experience this. I know Vtwins are noisy but I'm uncertain if I have a problem. After all is a new bike.

Thanks in advance.

That's a tough one to tell without hearing it.

The bike does make more noise once it gets hot, especially if the air temp is high. You could take it to a dealer but I'd venture to guess he'd say "It's normal".

Where do you live?

Also try posting on the R* Riders Forum. Maybe there's someone in your area could listen to it and give you an unbiased opinon.

Don't put premium in unless you're running high compression pistons. This probably won't help your knocking issue, but premium gas in these low compresssion motors will cause you other problems.

just out of curiosity, you ain't trying to run it at too low revs are you.

it ain´t a harley, and despite having a low setting on the rev limiter, roadstars do like their revs!

5th gear is mostly redundant below 50mph and trying to accelerate at that point will make a knocky clattery sound that will clear up as speed increases.

i know it´s just got 140 miles on it but give it some throttle without thrashing it during the break in period. `chugging´ a new motor can harm it as much as thrashing it.

Post edited by: erizo, at: 2006/04/11 10:07

Doc, thanks for your advise.

I live in Puerto Rico where the average temperatures are in the 80's. My father, who owns a 1990 Suzuki Intruder 1400 says that the problem is that the helmet I use does not cover the ears so what I'm hearing is the normal engine noise. I will try changing to another brand of gas to see if the sound stops. Again, it only happens when I accelerate and that is what guides me to think that it has to do with detonations in the engine.

It makes the sound in every shift when accelerating and the engine is hot. Even when advancing from stop in firs gear.

Thanks for you advise guys.

I have to go along with DocShadow, aceman, and erizo. I experienced the same thing during the breakin period. My 04 manual had shift speed suggestions that didn't make sense. If I followed the book, I ended up lugging the engine. At 3,000 miles the engine has gotten smoother and quieter but some of that might be due to an evolving operation pattern on my part. Fifth gear is only used at speeds above 55mph now. Oh by the way, after I modified the stock exhaust to stage one, I love to tach it up and hear the tones thus avoiding those low chugging rpm's.

The "knock" is very common in the Roadstar. It is the topic of discussion on many forums. When I first heard it in my 99, I thought "Oh crap, my engine is toast." That was 10,000 miles ago. It is no worse, no better. Only knocks when good and hot on a hot day but sounds for all the world like a rod knock. Apparently it isn't. Yamaha claims, I think, that it is a clearance issue with the generator shaft. I decided to ignore it. I notice it more now that I went from my Cobra pipes back to stock exhaust.

Check the intake manifold for leaks real good. Jetting can also affect it.

Mine did the same thing. First was a leaking intake, then after changing the carb it came back until I changed jetting.

Post edited by: USAFRETIRED, at: 2006/04/12 21:12
