Hey Ronecat,
Check to see if the rollover valve is trying to plug up. This will cause the tank to quit flowing fuel. It is down by the battery box. You can unhook the line to it up at the top of the tank under the speedo bezel.

When did they move teh rollover valve? My 2003 has it up just below the frame neck and that is where most AIS and SMOG removal docs show it as well. BUt I saw a digi pic on a forum showing where you describe. I KNOW mine is not there tho. Just curious.
Thanks

Crash,
You're probably right. Mine is an '04 and it's down by the battery.

This has happened to mine in the past and I found that Yamaha has placed the rubber vent tub that come off of the steel vent line on the tank in a location where it can collect water from your front tire in heavy rains and doesn't drain very well.
Try relocating that vent tube or as I have done I have just cut the line shorter and rerouted it under the gas tank. It seems to stay dry under there and the tank can still vent.

HSR42 Mikuni Gravity fed? You need to vent your gas cap dude:
On the under side of the cap there are two screws. Remove them be carefull of
the two little springs that push out on the lock tabs. Remove the cover for the
lock tabs note how the tabs and springs fit together. Then remove the seal
plate. Under there you will see two tiny rubber plugs in some small holes.
Remove the rubber plugs and anything else that is in there. You will see some
smaller holes at the bottom where you removed the plugs. Those are vents to
atmosphere. Reassemble the cap. It is now vented. The tank vent alone isn't enough to keep the flow going to the HSR42.
