the reserve is just a lower spot on the fuel valve you can leave it onreserve and drive just like that if you want but if the gas gauge breaks and you run out of gas your out of gas and dont have the 1 gallon or so that you could count on to get you to the gas station. i know someone will say i go by miles but in this thread i have seen a huge swing in miles where you flip to the reserve 130-180 or more so i wouldnt go by miles to fill up rather than when i need to switch or i need to strech my legs

Ah ok gotcha.

See I go by miles because my gauge is so horribly innacurate. It reads empty at 120 miles. At this point I just trust that unless something goes majorly wrong I'm going to get 38-40mpg or better, which works out to about 160 miles of riding with a gallon left over for emergencies.

I topped off this morning and checked my odomete and its 49.9 miles one way now lets see if I can make two round trips before my low fuel light comes on. I know I never got that kind of mileage before

ok just got back from the gas station and driving very aggresive with a 50/50 mix of city and highway i got 35mpg not to bad i dont think. i will try my best to drive like a 90 year old man this week and see where i get
LOL
Whenever I pull from a red light, I am usually over the limit and about 3 bus lengths from the cars I just left that seem to still be in the intersection
I gots no probs droppin a gear or two and flailing about but the stupid throttle only twists so far.
My tank is FULL and its raining, and no, I'm not putting my new frt tire on as the old one is not full baloney yet

Im proud of myself. I made it a whole 17miles without riping the slide out the top of my carb like normal and I kepted it at a 65-70roll on the highway. Felt like all the joy in life was left behind at home though this tank of gas maybe the death of me

Ok so i find it imposible to do 70mph for a whole tank i nust cant do it. I live at 80+ with a 50/50 mix of city and highway and im hard on the throttle. So 125 or so miles and im reaching for the fuel valve. For those of you that ”can” behave when do you reach for the reserve?
===============
Same basic results with my 06 silverado too,when riding more agressive i hit the low fuel light just at approx 125-130 miles.
If i ride conservative i can go 150-160miles max before hitting low fuel light where hitting reservae is only a few miles after seeing low fuel light come on.
All the above is whith riding 2 up,stock bags loaded including aftermarket bags on rear luggage rack loaded too along with tall windscreen in upper position for more wind drag too.
I have stock airbox but do have aftermarket Road Burner longshot type pipes and did in fact need to tweak carb a bit richer in low speed to main transition to correct a lean cond in that throttle positon area post installing the aftermarket pipes.

This morning I had the light come on and filled the tank with 3.89 gallons at 156.0 miles. I average around 40-44 mpg, depending on where and who I am riding with. Don't know that I have ever had to hit the reserve.
Bought the bike used and not sure if the carb has been re-jetted. Waiting till this winter to check it out. 95 degrees in Portland, Maine today. Feels more like.....Texas!
