If you have the front wheel off the ground and the wheel slams to one side or the other it is too loose. It should move freely but not compltely free. Does that make semse  |

The rear tires all will wear flat with time due to the weight of the bike.
The only other thing I can think of would be how the front tire was mounted. There is a colored dot on the side wall and has to be aligned
with the valve on the rim.

Do a lot of Roadies have this problem? I just bought a '01 Roadie with ll500 miles and it scared the crap out of me the first time it did it. I was slowing down at 35 mph with both hands busy adjusting my helmet straps when it started a real head shake. It does not do it if I have just a little pressure on the bars.
I checked for worn head bearings, ok. My front end will also fall to one side when off the ground very easily. My front tire is the orignal, I have a new one ordered.

One thing you might want to check, and thats your air pressure. I Have the ME880's on mine and I run higher pressure in both the front and rear. ( 41 front / 43 rear )

FYI, I just replaced my original front tire at 14,600 miles. She was wore out. But at around 12,000 or so miles, I noticed a lot more "activity" in the bars, Esp. if I released them for a moment to test my theory. Now, with a fresh tire (running stock bridgestone's), it's back to rock solid again. Your tire probably just need replacing, as you've concluded. BB

I have a 2003 limited edition Roadstar Silverado. With just over 10k miles. Does the same thing. My riddin buddy Lou (goldwing driver) says any bike with a windshield/fairing on it will do that. Only does it decellerating about 30 to 35 mph. Never has done it at any other time or speed.

I talked to my mechanic buddy who has been working on metric bikes for thirty years. He says Gold Wings are notorious for head shake. I have had three Harley Electra Glides and never experienced the problem. The mechanic buddy says the name for the problem is sympathetic harmonics. The bike(or tire) starts to drift off the path and the tire tries to correct the offline motion, then corrects again the other way starting the shimmy. Or at least I think that is what he told me, my memory isn't what it used to be.  |
