the sensor under the left side cover is a thermal switch. This is what determines if the carb heater will turn on.

Just power to the engine.

I think what several are wondering, is if it seems like it is stumbling and running out of fuel(possible float adjustment issue), or if it seems like the ignition system is working and sparking one moment, and not the next?
Based on the way the bike looks, are you going to put a new aftermarket ignitor unit(ignition module) in to increase the redline limit, or are you staying with the stock one?

Re:Bike runs for seconds then dies then starts fine 1 Year ago
There is not any sputtering or loss of fuel when the motor dies. The bike will idle fine and I can even rev it for a few seconds before it completely loses ignition.

I didn't have any plans to replace the ignition for increased power because I go to the track with my R1 if I feel like going fast.

I'm not certain how to check the ignition system for problems. I know there are plug testers but is there any way to check the ignitor unit for faultiness? That's a $500 problem that I would rather like to avoid if there is a way to test it and know for certain.

Thanks for all the suggestions/help forum-er's.

From what I've read in Clymers, the ignitor unit, is not able to be checked. You check everything else out first and if the rest is fine, they consider the ignitor to be bad. Others will correct me on this if I'm wrong.
Mind you, I'm just guessing here. That's why I was wondering if you might be thinking about swapping for the upgrade anyway. It'd be nice, if you could find a good used one.....cheap.
If you pick up a Clymers Road Star manual(about $30 at amazon), it'll give you all the different test procedures to check the pick up coil, coils, caps for the plugs etc.. The second edition, has colored wiring diagrams.
You might check behind the left side cover for a two wire connector that comes from the pick up coil, and see if it's making a good connection.
We had a member with a bad pick up coil on here just a while back, but his wouldn't even start. We had another member who had intermittent problems, who found a two wire connection behind the left side cover(I'm just guessing here, he wasn't sure what it went to)that was loose. When he fixed it, his bike started running right.

I'm guessing, its somewhere between the pick up coil, and the coils. If one coil was bad, the bike would probably still run. I don't know if the bike would start and run with a faulty pick up coil or not.

So in my long search for the damn gremlin that seems to be pestering my 2000 roadstar, I checked the float level using guidelines from the manual and concluded that the float level was very low compared to correct specs.

I've got to get a new battery for the bike before I can turn the thing over to see if that corrected my problem, but has anyone run into this issue before? When the float level is low, and I mean low, would the bike simply die then start back up fine, or would it sputter and die?

Just curious, and thought all my fellow gearheads on this site would enjoy passing along their tales and possibly insight to the symptoms of the low float level.

Thanks.

I'm certainly happy you stopped back. I hope the float was the problem. Yes, it could cause the bike to die, and then start again easily, as it is replenished when the engine is off.

Here is another easier way to check the level.....

http://weislake.com/sig/mucker/carb/carbfloat/carbfloat.htm

You should be using the 04 and later spec, not the 99-03. Yamaha made that change. They are all set the same now.
