Change it the stock one slips in most of the later models, My friend and I both have 2004 Roadstars, and we had to change them out. Good Luck

Motorman,

Just say your post.

I've got the Barnett Conversion setup, too. It includes a pressure plate and coil springs. The dealer may be referring to the Barnett friction disks and plates. The Yamaha ones are longer lasting (based on what I've read of others' experiences), but the Barnett one's aren't really JUNK, either.

There is an article in the Tech Tips section of this website that shows all this pretty well, although the Barnett setup has been improved a little since the article was written. Here's the link:

I also have a better idea for taking the clutch basket nut off than what the article shows (in my opinion). But if you're having your dealer do the work, it won't matter, as they'll do it the Yamaha way.

Anyway, I'd agree with Doc, it definitely is a little stiffer pull. Not hugely different, be unmistakenly.

I commute nearly daily, nearly year-round, with my Road Star, and it's mostly through stop-n-go city traffic. I do just fine with the clutch, even from day-one. Don't even notice it anymore.

By the way, I've switched to oils designated as "Motorcycle" type now. At least, I know that Royal Purple synthetic is formulated (they say) to offer extra protection for the sheering forces in the transmission. But mostly I just feel good that I'm not going to find my clutch slipping from having accidentally using the wrong oil.

Hope this helps.

Randysgym,

Thanks for the info. I am doing the job myself tommorow. I decided to go with the yami plates with the barnett conversion kit. What is your trick with the clutch Basket?

I used an impact gun. Came off like a knife through butter.

I'm pleased with the way it turned out.

Had to go back only once to realign the basket.

Motorman,

Yea, the impact wrench works great to get it off. To get it back on, and properly torqued to line up with the tab-washer, I used a setup like below.

Rather than purchase a one-time-use tool like the Yamaha clutch basket wrench, I wrapped a nylon-webbing, hold-down strap around the basket. One end is tied to the frame. The other end is just wrapped around the basket, overlapping itself. The webbing does stretch. But as long as you wrap it in the right direction (see photo below), it will tighten on itself nicely.

Hope this helps.

i went with the warrior spring on the existing yamaha plates (they had plenty of meat left even after 65,000 hard klics) when i started getting a bit of clutch slip after the last of my mods.

the difference in lever action is negligable, and it hasnīt slipped since.

works out a damn site cheaper than the barnett as well
