I'm thinking of switching to synthetic oil. Do I need to do an engine flush after draining the old oil. What type/brands would you recommend.

Also, what about carb cleaner additives to gas. Yes, no, maybe.

You can change directly over to synthetic. No flush, just drain the old oil out hot. I use Mobil 1 20/50 v-twin full syn. as do others, but there are many choices.
As for the additives, many put MMO, or seafoam in their tanks routinely to keep carbon at bay. Won't hurt, just use it in moderation. 2 cents, BB

What BB said. But I'm using RP 20/50 car oil. In theory you shouldn't need to run any kind of cleaner if your bike is jetted correctly.
But it doesn't hurt to put a couple ounce in every 3 or 4th tank.

I use AMSOIL MCV 20W50 full synthetic. This oil has been especially formulated for air cooled V-Twin with wet, multiple-disc clutch. Very please with the result.

Never had any problem with SVS so didn’t need any kind of gas additive, guess I’ve been lucky, up to now anyway!

Whatever brand you choose, I’m pretty sure you will appreciate the difference.

CR ... I'm on the Amsoil band wagon.... I do a lot of highway riding and no sign of SVS ... but I'll also try adding some MMO in the spring, I listen to the RSC gurus and try to keep running at her best! here's a quick link to ---> AMSOIL

Whether or not you have had SVS

As a carb cleaner MMO or its equivalent keeps fuel pump and carb parts clean..retarding formation of gum and varnish in the fuel system....

Add a little to gas on a regular basis

Mobil 1 V-twin 20w50....and just drain old oil...

Mobil 1 V-twin 20w50 without any flushing, a shot of MMO every third or fourth tank and you're in the clear. I can actually feel the difference, after running a dose of MMO in how smooth she runs.

Hi all,

Looked up the MMO site and found it quite instructive. This product has been around since 1923 and never heard of it, until now, with you Roadies maniacs!

I was a bit reticent at first, but I will definitely try it in my gas tank because every one here seems to be very satisfied with the result, but I’m questioning myself when it comes to using it with motor oil, the manufacturer mention to just replace one of the CAR engine oil quarts with a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and that will do the trick. But can we do the same with our motorcycle since the same oil lubricates motor and transmission at the same time, will MMO cause any damage or slippage of the clutch?

Thanks.

I believe the procedure is.. before you do an oil change to drain a quart of oil add a quart of MMO...run for about 150 miles then do a complete oil change....it is basically an engine flush procedure...

http://chrislawson.net/kz/techtips.shtml

In the short term as an engine flush procedure it may not do any damage
however....NEVER have any additives in yer oil on a regular basis...

Just my opinion but I wouldn't run anything in my oil for more than 15 minutes max. If your running a good synthetic and changing it regularly it should keep things pretty clean.
