Defective Valve Lifter(s) 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Anyone have any experience with valve lifters that aren't operating properly? Would be interested in knowing what the symptoms are and how you'd go about determining which lifter was defective. Doc, I think you mentioned you had to replace a valve lifter on your bike early in the game. How did you determine there was a lifter problem? I think I remember some comments you made in one of your replies but I can't for the life of me remember how to get back to it.

In the upper right corner there is a box with "search forum" in it. Just select the box and type the word ("lifter&quot in it.

My lifter was bleeding down overnight. When I starated the bike up in the moring it would clatter and then slowly quieten down as it pumped back up.

Why do you suspect a bad lifter?

You may need a valve adjustment ?

I'm not really having the problem, Doc. Friend of mine has been through the mill with his bike which is like mine -- a 2005 Silverado. He had the "sticky valve" problem and was unsuccessful at getting the dealership to do anything about it while it was in warranty, so he took the heads off, found where the exhaust valves were sticking because of carbon buildup. He cleaned all that up, reamed the valve guides and put OE springs on the valves. Next he changed over from a Max Air setup to a BAK and rejetted according to all the recommendations on this and the riders' forum. His bike was running pretty strong for a while but now it's back to acting like the valves are sticking on his rear cylinder. He thinks it's the valve problem again and I was just trying to think of some other avenues to explore that might make sense. I probably ought to get him on here to explain the symptoms since he's been living with them and getting pretty fed up.

I found the area in the forum talking about the leaking lifters. Sounds like it's more of a noise issue right after starting that dies down after the lifter has a chance to pump up. He's having a performance problem. Bike just has no power when it's acting up.

If he keeps carboning up, maybe his carb is too rich. Seems like most guys are worried about running too lean and so set up the carb rich.
