Gram, don't forget to tell him that the ported stocker is more prone to cracking, and with its vacuum port intact, more prone to developing air leaks.
06 I would be interested in reading the threads of people you have seen with the cracked manifolds ......thanks ....Coug

Coug, I haven't personally seen anyone who has had these issues.
I only have the basic delphi subscription, so I can't go back that far, but if you do a search for "ported stock manifold" on the RSR forum, you'll find threads referencing these issues, from folks whom I think you would find credible.
Good luck.

I have seen those threads, just never seen anyone say "hey my manifold is cracked" been reading in a few forums for better than a year and have yet to see it typed by the guy that experienced it one time..... so it cant be a big problem as far as I can see....Coug

It is not unreasonable to think that the rubber on these manifolds could crack, but it would typically take many years and or miles to cause it. Most of my older scoots have cracked manifold boots (same type deal), but they still work fine until they crack clean through. Now I will agree with 06 about the nipple cracking and possibly leaking , but that would hardly sway me from buying it again. BB

I agree that having a ported is better than having a stocker, but I still think that buying a Baron ported stocker is not an exercise in good stewardship. On the other hand, if you're porting a stocker yourself, then I'd say go for it!
Given the fact that you can buy either the Nemesis or Ben Herr for only about $20 more than what a Baron costs, it makes no good sense to spend that kind of money on a ported stocker! The quality alone is worth that much.
Well, this is just my $.002 06 but I don't think its a huge issue(the cracking). I ported a lot of used manifolds and only one had cracks in a critical area. It was cracked on top where there is no insert underneath to seal it. The cracks at the unions to the edges are normal and don't leak (at least I never saw one that did). If it worries you, you can use high temp silicon to seal them (thats actually what I did).
Its really his call, just couldn't agree that the stockers are not worth getting ported because they are, and you didn't enumerate your issues with the stockers, just wrote them off.
BTW.... I am not stating a preference here at all. I think any well ported manifold is good, and have already acknowledged that the cast ones are smoother driving.
I prefer ported stockers on bikes I work on a lot. Taking them off and putting them back on is a snap.
The stewardship is your call to make. I don't make it the same way that you do.

Here's a new one for this mix: I've been reading this thread after a search for Nemesis manifolds. I have to buy a new mainfold as mine is no good (cracks, won't seat). Which one should I buy: Nemesis, Ben Herr, stock and port it myself, Baron's stock hand-ported, etc???
If you check the Engine Chatter/Vibration thread I've been posting, you will see that I'm ready to buy a Nemesis to replace my stock. I'm looking for your advice now after reading this thread. To me, the issue of Nemesis' extended throat is moot, unless you guys can enlighten me
If you give me a recommendation, please provide a link.
Thanks,
Rayjay

Porting the stocker is not an option for you.
To my knowledge there is no comparison between the Nemesis and a 'professionally' ported manifold. However, the runs on the Nemesis are much longer .... that's why it sticks out ... so I intuitively believe it to be a more efficient manifold.
I've had my Nemesis on for 6 years without a problem.
I have no experience with the Ben Herr.

What part of it is actually longer?
Longer runners are typically a way of deriving greater torque at lower rpm.
I'd definitely be interested in that! I'm a torque maven... can't get enough of it!
Does the carb stick out farther?

The spigot the carb attaches to.

Thats why Ben Herr sells two versions. A long spigot version for the torque hounds, and stock length spigot for the guys who don't want to mess with it.
Does the carb stick out farther?
I don't know about the Ben Herr, but if you can still get a Nemesis its about 3/8 farther out. If I remember correctly
