Re:New Vance & Hines Powershots 1 Year, 1 Month ago
The think the Speedstar jets are Mik. I'm getting mid 30's mpg. The setup I'm currently running is what the kit recommended for Stock and Speedstar Long Drag Exhaust. I'll play around with it and see if I can improve performance, but right now it seems to be running better than it ever did. I guess the main points is you are suggesting; 1) I'mprobably running rich, 2) I shouldn't be overheating the pipes, and 3) the discoloration is to be expected?

If you have other jets you could try the 167.5 or 170. The 50 pilot has a lot to do with your 30 mpg. Along with the 5th grrove. It seems almost a given that the recommendations from airkit, pipe, and jet manufactures will all set you too rich. I think you can throw dealers in there too.

I have the speedstar air and jetting kits. I put the 165 main jet in along with a 50 pipot jet, needle clip on 5th position, and air screw at 3 turns out.

I think you're too rich on the bottom end which is compensating for the lean top end.

Change out the pilot to the stock #35. Then do the WOT test. You'll most likely find that you'll need to go to a larger main (167.5) as the pilot cannot compensate.

OK - I put the stock pilot back in (#35) along with the 170 main jet that came with the kit, and the needle clip on the 4th ring. I played around with the PMS a bit and ended up at about 2 and a half turns out. I also adjusted the accelerater pump screw. Runs great! Thanks for the tips! ~SG

I have ordered Vance & Hines staggered Short Shot exhaust. I have removed the fuel pump and AIS, drilled out the float jet. Added a K&N air filter. Is this the same jet and needle combination I need to start with?

Thanks, I really enjoy reading the comments and tech articles.

For new air cleaner and pipes most folks can start with:

DJ 180 or Mikuni 170
Stock #35 pilot
Clip on 5 the slot from the top
PMS 2.5 - 3 turns out

Then do the WOT test.

Thanks Doc. I will order the Mikuni jet. My exhaust was back ordered so I am cleaning up little details. I'm turning my '01 Roadie into a bobber. I saw one in Daytona last March and fell in love.

If you haven't gotten one already, you will also need to pick up one of the multi-slotted needles in addition to the main jet. The stock needle has only one setting. I don't know if they sell them separately - you may need to buy an entire jet kit which will come with an assortment of pilot and main jets.

The dealers are always trying to help out I guess with the extra parts. You wouldn't believe the 'extra' parts I have already, always my fault though. Our dealer parts guy has been helpful. Thanks for the tip, I didn't realize the stock needle didn't have but one slot.
