Exhaust question 4 Years, 6 Months ago
Just wondering how the baffle reallly works in the aftermarket exhaust. Does the exhaust flow out the middle and the baffle deadens the sound or does it flow through the baffle material wrap?

The exhaust flows thru the middle and is disturbed by the louvres and the sound is deadened by the wrap...

Depends on the pipe.

For duals, eg. longshots, there is not enough room inside the pipe so it's as Pop described above.

For the V&H Propoips, the baffle is a tube with the leading edge capped and holes in the side of the baffle. The gases flow sideways through the baffle. You can make them quieter by wrapping baffle material around the baffle which means the gases flow through the baffle material.

Will wrapping more material around them cause a drop in performance or cause serious backpressure?

Depends on the baffle style. For one where the gases flow through the wrap then it depends how much you wrap ... but yes. The straight thru baffles .... no.

The real baffle warp is quite dense so one layer is usually sufficient to quiet the pipes down. Pink insulation is not a substitute.

So where can you find 'real' baffle wrap and is one type better than another? Also, if you decide to go back to naked baffles, does wrapping them cause any problems? Thanks. SG

Try the dealer. Dirt bike shops seem to have them.

It's kinda grey/brown in color ... very dense looking.

You don't need to take the wrap out ... just leave it in as it eventually blows out.

What Doc said, and you can put a couple of rounds of masking tape around it to hold it in place while you put it back in.

In my experamenting with baffles the size of the exit outlet also controls the sound. I am working on a set of baffles now that are straight thru that goes from the 1 3/4ID header pipe to a 2 1/2 x 8 inch long straight thru pipe then back to a 1 3/4 in exit pipe. The 2 1/2 gives it a deep tone and acts as an echo chamber then the 1 3/4 exit tones the loudness down. Keep in mind the smaller the pipe the higher the velocity of the gases the larger the pipe the higher the pressure of the gases.

I use FMF four stroke silencer repacking, works like a charm. Larger shops that carry dirt bikes should have it in stock. One package should last you some time, and it's only around 10 bucks. BB
