Re:milege down 6 Years ago
Why do so many people on this forum complain about gas mileage? My bike runs great with the modes I have made and I get roughly 38 to 40 mpg. That's more than most cars and trucks on the road. Even if it was down at 30 mpg I would still be happy. As long as the bike runs good. Remember if you increase your performance above a certain point, you mileage will suffer. Sorry, don't mean to sound condisending. I know that's spelled wrong.

Main reason I'm concerned about gas mileage is that it seems to be a pretty good indicator of whether you're running too rich. Worst problem I've heard people talking about here on this forum is the "sticky valve" issue and I have a friend who actually had the problem. He was running rich and when we removed his heads they were caked with carbon. Exhaust valves were so crusty they wouldn't operate properly. Had to ream the valve guides, put in new valve springs and valve guide seals. Was a major PITA for him -- not just the valve job but all the poor performance of his machine up until that point in time. He and I both have become strong believers in running the Road Star engine lean as possible. More knowledgeable people than me have suggested it's pretty hard to run a Road Star too lean because they run so bad you just can't tolerate it. It seems to be very easy to run too rich and while you're doing it performance is typically pretty good until the day of reckoning comes. I'm just trying to keep the heads in my machine as carbon free as possible. The 48 to 50 mpg is just a bonus in my opinion.
