Have to jet? 6 Years ago
About the only real complaint I have on my Silverado is the stacked 2 into 2 pipes that limit the saddle bags to purse size. I like big bags and on a bike this size I think the stock bags look out of place. I can see changing the pipes as soon as possible just because of this issue. I'm not after more performance so jetting and air to increase the ponies isn't a goal. I also want louder (not obnoxious) because I believe that being heard is just as important for safety as being seen. I am looking at the Cobra low boys. OK, I'll get to my question. Do you have to change jets and air to use after market exhaust? Will my bike run like crap if I don't or will it cause damage? On my last bike I just punched the baffles and tweaked the mixture screws to get the sound. I read the exhaust mods on this site but the stock pipes won't work for me so I have to go to after market.

Thanks

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/05/06 10:25

No. Generally you only need to adjust the PMS.

No. You should be OK

Thanks Doc. Just what I wanted to hear. Checked out the evolution of your bike. Alot of wrench time there but it payed off. NICE!! Since I have no willpower when it comes to things like this I wouldn't bet that once I get them on I won't be checking out air and jet kits. Actually like the Barons V twin / 102 CI air kit. And it comes with the jet kit. Here I go.

Thanks, still trying to finish it between the various 'honey-dos'.

well, just my 2 cents. I started by having Cobra straight pipes on. Too loud for me. Switched to Cobra Blvd., but didn't like the sound. Finally put on Bub 2 in 1 exhaust. Nice low rumble, not too loud at all, except when you give it full throttle, then, people know you have pipes. Buddy of mine has V&H exhaust, very nice as well, but louder. Thought screwing around with the PMS would be good enough, but not after adding a K&N filter. Then had to re-jet, and used a Dynojet kit, with the 195 main. Of course, then, I lacked air and simply removed the air diverter from the factory air box. Now considering drilling the holes as per the article in the factory air box. Cheaper than a big air kit. However, bike is running nice now, so...may just leave it with the air diverter off.

Re:Have to jet? 6 Years ago
Thanks Pete

As much as I like K&N filters I figured if I started messing with the filter it would lead to jetting and where ever else it snowballed from there. That's why I was hoping I could just install the pipes and leave everything else alone. I'm not after a performance bump so it would mean buying parts for a result I'm not after. I just want lower pipes for bigger bags and louder. I think Yamaha should have just put a low mounted 2 into 1 on the bike to begin with. Better performance for most of the throttle usage and people wouldn't be so limited on bag size. A 2 into 1 wouldn't have made any difference to anyone who was going to dump the stock pipes for after market anyway but it would help people who could have been happy with stock. Drill out the plate, tweak the mixture screws and it would have been a done deal. OK, I'm going to hop off my soapbox now. Yamaha ain't listening anyway

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/05/07 22:13

My thought and past experiences are that, if you only put pipes in, and not straight pipes, I have usually gotten away with it. You may have to richen the PMS a bit, but could be all you have to do. This worked on a few Hondas' that I had. If you try it, worst case is you re-sell the pipes, or buy a Jet kit and filter. Anyway you look at, generally low cost mods (considering how much some mods are).

Re:Have to jet? 6 Years ago
All righty, My pipes are supposed to be here Friday. When I did the baffles and mixture screws on my ACE I got lucky. I found a site where a guy had done the same thing. The stock setting for the screws was 2 1/4 and he backed them out to 3 turns and everything was good. So I figured I'd start at 3 and see what happened. Bingo. Perfect. So has any one here put Cobra Loboy shotguns on a 1700 without changing anything else? If so what did you set the screws at? I know this is a pretty narrow field but it doesn't hurt to ask. At least I can get a close starting point.

Thanks

Once I get the cap off the PMS screw can I put the carb back on and put everything back together and still adjust it? Or do I have to take the air cleaner off everytime?

Thanks

I have Nemesis manifold which pushes the BAK out a bit so I can get a screwdriver in there and turn it. But it's not easy

I 'forget' (read too lazy) to wear gloves and usually get burned.

If you have the stock setup or just the OEM manifold I think it may be too tight.

You could get a long flexible driver in there but then it's hard to find the slot in the PMS head.
