Same thing happened to me this last summer. The cable broke in the exact same place as you are describing. I had about 25000 miles on that braided stainless clutch cable. I made sure with the new one that the cable was oiled and made sure that the connection ball that goes in the lever was lubed well. I have never lubed or oiled those things, and it is absolutely amazing how much easier it is to operate the clutch when it is properly lubed. Good luck man.
