Clutch Cable fraying 4 Years, 5 Months ago
This is my 3rd clutch cable that has frayed right at the connection to the lever. This is a $45 braided stainless steel one and I'm really pissed. It frays just behind where the little connector ball goes into the clutch lever. Can I fix this? What does it take to put a new ball on the end. The cable is extra long so I think I can use a little of the length but I don't know what I need to do. Also, what can be causing this fraying? The first time I thought the cable was just old. The 2nd was because after 30000 mile I figured it was normal and I'd been in a couple of parades. This is only a few months old and I've not been in any parades.

haven't run across that yet, but i would take a long hard look at the groove in the handle where the ball hooks in, it probably needs to have a sharp edge relieved..as far as putting on another ball, those are most likely swaged on, much like the rigging on a sailboat..if you live in a boating area, a rigger could probably do it for you if he has the right size dies..It also needs a little lube in there occasionally..hope this helps some...

I agree with Flashback, eyeball that area, for damage first, fix it if there is some. Also, is the adjustment correct, or could it be out just enough to be putting a strain on the attachment point right there? Just a thought , BB.

See if everything is lining up correctly. Check for sharp or bent edges.

If all looks good as far as possible sharp edges, make sure you put some good grease on the ball and hole it goes in. Most of the time when cables fray at the ball it's because there is not enough lube on the ball or barrel causing the ball to twist and it causes metal fatigue at the juncture of the cable and ball end. And if you change the clutch to a heaver spring set up it increases the pressure on the cable end also.

Same thing happened to me this last summer. The cable broke in the exact same place as you are describing. I had about 25000 miles on that braided stainless clutch cable. I made sure with the new one that the cable was oiled and made sure that the connection ball that goes in the lever was lubed well. I have never lubed or oiled those things, and it is absolutely amazing how much easier it is to operate the clutch when it is properly lubed. Good luck man.
