Stock pipe removal 4 Years, 3 Months ago
Can someone explain so I can understand how to get the stock pipes off. I know about the flanges but kinda stumped on the brackets at the rear. I don't want to take something off I don't have to.
Thanks

Post edited by: 03RSrob, at: 2004/09/18 01:47

There are two bolts that need to be unscrewed that hold the bracket onto the bike. They are just below the swingarm pivot.

Also, the muffler assembly (the mufflers are welded together) is hooked to the rear bracket via one or two crimp tabs. You'll need to bend them out a little to get the mufflers off the bracket.

It's quite easy, though--soft metal. Just remove those two bolts (previously mentioned), uncrimp the tab(s), loosen the muffler pipe clamps, and wriggle the assembly off.

I think most (or maybe all) aftermarket pipes also want you to remove the rear bracket. To get it off you'll need to either snip or cut the square loop of oversized clothes-hanger wire that is welded to the braket. It corrals the hydraulic line for the rear brake. Once you've made a cut in the wire loop, just bend it enough to get it clear of the hydraulic line.

Note: If you really don't want to cut the square, wire loop, you'll need to dissemble the hydraulic line, pull it out of the loop, reconnect the hydraulic line, and then bleed and refill the hydraulic fluid for the rear brake reservoir. WAY TOO MUCH WORK.

Hope that helps.

Those are the two bolt I thought would loosen the bar that is attached to the pipes. Do ya just go at them with a hex wrench? Kinda close quarters there.

Thanks guys for your help.

Post edited by: 03RSrob, at: 2004/09/19 06:39

Use a socket wrench with an 6" or longer extension to make life easier. But yea, that's them. Remember though, once you remove those bolts you'll still need to bend out the tab(s) along the side of that bolt platform.

Out with the old and in with the new. What an ordeal but the Cobra Classic Slashcuts sound awesome.
I got the old pipes off but when I tried to get the old mounting bracket off, one the the hex heads stripped out. I had to grill the bolt through the head and center punch the shaft of the bolt out. But after that smooth sailing. Took about two and a half hours with the problems.

Boy do those Cobra's sound good... And it really woke up the bike. Pulls hard in second, way better. No carb problems, runs real smooth.
Has a funny smell though. I am guessing it is the pipes warming up and burning off any "stuff".

Can't wait to plug the AIS and put on the MaxAir.

Post edited by: 03RSrob, at: 2004/09/22 07:42
