short one = top one = rear cylinder

Check your rear plugs, sounds like you may have fouled them from running too rich.

OR

Worse case scenario is the rear cylinder exhaust valves are sticking. Seems to be a not uncommon occurance for the 04 model.

Either way you're probably running too rich and need to lean it out. What the setup on your carb.?

When you say exhaust valve sticking, Do you mean literally sticking in the open position? You would have such a loss of power the bike would barley run, that is if the piston doesn't hit the valve in the first place. I'm just curious because i've never heard of that being a problem on a jap motor(the inventors of the 16000 rpm redline)

That's correct but it does not stay open all the way.

On some motors (post 03) there is a buildup of carbon in the valve guides which causes the valve to bind up.

There have been a large number of discussions of the problem and the fixes on the R* riders forum if you're interested.

Doc, you do realize a valve spring has about 100 pounds of seat pressure right? I do not think that alittle carbon is gonna stop that valve. The only way it can be held open is if the carbon builds up on the seat under the valve head. I'm not gonna argue because i love this site,You guys are awesome and I love roadstars some more than others

Well Dan .... you are welcome to 'argue' all you want. I've been wrong before and I expect to be wrong inthe future.

But you're not getting away that easy. Here's some light reading on the dreaded 'sticky valve syndrome'.

Doc please do not qoute me but,I've read all there is to read on the subject and have found that no one has actually taken the cyclinder head off the engine and seen the valve stuck in the partial open position. And most all have said there remote oil resovior was to full, Which makes good sense, cause then the valve seal or (umbrella) would have excessive oil around it provoking it to burn the oil on the stem. I've taken all types of bike, and atv engines apart and seen 3/4" (well maybe not 3/4&quotof carbon on everything internal And never had one with a (sticking valve) Most all of my wrenching is for power upgrades not problems

Thought I'd chime in with my 2 cents even if I'm not any where near a professional wrench. If the oil isn't over full then the oil isn't the problem. Below is part of the second reply from the top link that Doc listed. It sounds like this guy had the problem, tore down the motor, saw it, and fixed it. And I'm thinking that as much as Yamaha hates to fix things if they did it under warranty it must really be broke.

I agree with Baron. My 05 had the sticky valves which started around 6000 miles. I pulled the top end down and cleaned them up and reamed the guides, replaced the springs with heavier springs.

Runs like a champ now. Some dealers have been known to do it for you under warranty

That's another theory floating around why the valve could be sticking.

I've not had that specific problem so I've never taken the heads off to see what's what.

I did have a problem a while back when I was running rich and my bike started misfiring on the back jug. I leaned it out and cleaned it up with MMO and it's running great again.
