rear fender rattle 3 Years, 6 Months ago
I have a 2004 Road Star (midnight star) and I have a rattle in the rear fender area. I have checked the license plate and it look solid. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check. I thought I read an article on the rattle a few months back, but, now, I can't locate the article.

Falcon,

Is it a 'clunk' in the rear when you hit a bump or an actual rattling sound when you're riding it?

If it clunks when you hit a bump then try tightening the bolt on top which holds the fender to the frame.

Are you sure it's the fender rattling. Sounds can be deceiving.

Sometimes the tank rattles. In this case, the back bolt holding the tank to the frame is loose and needs to be tightend. It sometimes helps to put rubber washers between the tank tangs and the frame.

Then there's the famous headlight rattle. You can figure that one out by touching the top of the headlight when you hear the noise and if it disappears, then it the headlight.

I fixed the headlight rattle already. The rattle in the rear area does happen when I hit a bump. Not a clunk sound, clearly, a rattle sound. I will try the fender bolt. I assume the bolt is under the passenger seat. Any other ideas?

Beats me

You could try and tap various things (license bracket, taillight, turnsignals, belt guards, etc) to see if they are loose.

I had the same rattle and was told by the dealer to tighten the rear fender bolts. I did this but it didn't help. What I did find though was that when I moved the belt guard from side to side that it was tapping against the swingarm. I then simply put a wide zip tie around the swingarm between the guard and it stopped immediately. Hope this helps. The rattle drove me crazy.

I had the same rattle. Took off the chrome belt guard to see if it was the problem. It was, I still haven't put it back on. You can't really see it very well under the saddle bag anyway. I would try going for a ride with the guard removed to see if things quiet down.

Regards
Rick

Can I join the rattle club? Same here. My rattle drove me nuts, took everything that I thought it was apart and back together and it was still there. While doing a good clean with the bags off again,my grandson came up with his plastic hammer and BAM. I love my grandson. What took me a lot of time and bad words (alone) he found in one instance. Beltguard.
