HD 40 Spoke Hub 4 Years, 4 Months ago
Hey gang. Looking for details about an HD rear wheel conversion, specifically the drive pulley. Yes! I am going fat tire in the rear, and maybe a fatter tire in the front. My bike is addicted to plastic surgery and is dying for me to cut on it some more. I have searched the forum and other places for two days and haven't found a few of the details I want before I move forward. I have a 16x7-40 spoke wheel, with a 40 spoke Softail rear hub assembly (still have to put it together). I know the Road Star drive pulley can be finessed onto the set-up with the appropriate spacers, adapters, and axles from Looneys; but there are too many great looking inexpensive chrome HD drive pulleys and I found one that I really want to use. Will I suffer any performance draw backs from using a HD 65 tooth rear pulley? Or does anyone have suggestions or cautions about converting to HD rear drive and brake parts? Those are the only parts I have not bought. I don't want to order from Pat at Looneys until I work out how to proceed next. If this has been covered and I somehow missed it, I apologize for my poor searching ability.

During my search for information I saw some requests for a write up of anyone doing this project themselves. I will photo and document my process/troubles and edit out any blood or cursing. I plan to do all the work myself to include reworking the fender subframe, brake mount, and even lacing the wheel itself (to save a few bucks, I'm using the OEM spokes after some powder coating). Then I will pass it to the beloved moderators for approval.

Check these guys SS Custom Cycles
or these BMS Choppers
Both specialize in custom parts for Roadstars with some sweet looking wheels, pulleys, brakes etc.
Good Luck!

Thanks, Steven. I took a look at those sites and they were more expensive than the HD stuff I have been looking into, even with the adapters and extras. I still have a lot chrome work I want done and I am trying to keep the expenses down. I am retiring from the Army in a year and want to pay out of pocket for everything. To save money and time, I would like to use the HD stuff as long as I don't end up creating performance problems or losses. I'm trying to figure out if using a 65 teeth HD pulley is a bad idea, and if there is anthing I need to consider when approaching the project.

By-the-way..Great looking ride!
