Boggs out 4 Years, 4 Months ago
Question. I have an 03 1600 that is all stock. When I get on it and hit about 3500 - 4000 rpms the bike boggs right down. Otherwise the bike runs great. Is this common on these bikes? Do I need to rejet? Or could there be another problem?

How close to 4000 RPM is it? The rev limiter on my '03 kicks in about 4300 RPM. Could be the case with you as well.

It is somewhere about 3500, I am going off of memory seeing how it it flip'in cold and snowy here. Can the rev limiter be change. The bike feels like it has more power just before it boggs out.

You can't change the stock limiter. You can get an ign box for a 1700. That will raise your limit up to around 4750. Or you could get a Speedstar or Dyna 3000 ign.

To change the stock rev limiter, you have to change the ignition box. There are two that I know of and have used. One is the Yamaha Speedstar part, which has one setting, and I believe that it changes the rev limiter up to about 4900 rpm. The second is the Dyna 3000 which gives you several options, including TDC advance/retard and Rev Limiter. Price difference is about $50 bucks. The units run $300 to $350, depending.

Good luck,

Russ
