This ain't right? Is it? 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Put the Cobra Lo Boys on today. Started it up, sounded great. Took it for a short ride, maybe 200 ft. up and back. No Back fire or anything. Took it out on the road and rode for about a 1/2 hour. Got it up to 60 in 3rd and let go of the gas. Nothing. The damn thing sounds like it's running better than ever. I didn't touch my carb at all. Never even took the air cleaner cover off. Is there something I'm missing? Could it have been too rich before and now with the new pipes it's right? I don't want to fix it if it ain't broke but I don't want to break it by doing nothing. Should I mess with the PMS anyway?

If you search the forum there was a post some tiume back about the newer R*s being a bit rich from the factory...I guess without putting it on a dyno there is no way to really tell but I have come to believe that if it ain't broke don't fix it. Now I am sure many of the more technologically advanced "brothers" will disagree and I will be curious to see what they say

So let me get this straight ..... it's running great but you want it to run lousy so that you can 'fix it'.

Hey, I've done that

As Ted said, the 1700 seem to be run "rich from the factory". Leave it be.

But if you like to tinker then adjust your PMS but make sure you know the current setting so that you can set it back to where it was

Take a note of the gas mileage. I'm interested to see where you're at.

Well, yeah. This ain't fair. Everyone else gets to take everyting apart just to adjust their PMS but I didn't get to. Next thing ya know my plugs will never foul and my tires will last for ever. I won't get to have any fun. Gee whiz. Actually my usual role as a Murphy's law test pilot doesn't allow things to go this easy so I'm never sure what's going on when it happens. So I thought I better ask.

I like adding goodies to the bike and I don't mind doing the maint on it. I even kinda like washing and detailing it. But if I can keep from tearing into in to it to fix something that's just fine with me.

OK, it seems like I have more room between shifts now. Especially between 1st and second. Don't see how the pipes could affect that so is it just because it sounds like a real V twin now and the cool factor is up a few notches? It does seem like I set some ponies free from the corral. Wasn't trying for that but I'll take it.

Update - I was just going to sign off and go for a putt and it started raining. Things are back to normal now.

Well aren't you lucky, it's been raining most of the week and will rain all this long weekend.

"OK, it seems like I have more room between shifts now. Especially between 1st and second."

As you said "it's the cool factor". You would need to bump up the rev limiter to see a 'real' change like that.

Sore spot huh? Just got done with 7 straight days of rain here so I know what you mean. Maybe you could use the rain days to catch up on finishing up your bike. If you can avoid the Honey do lists. Probably just hit another sore spot didn't I?

Few months ago its a 2005 I did stage three on the exhaust with out any else but got backfiring on hard decel ..AIS removed ..I think the complete exhaust is better tuned or something because it has more giddy up and go and im gonna watch mileage and plugs now.. did not touch carb or intake
I might add... I tried some cobra slip ons with stock header pipes.. but didnt like the sound they had fixed baffles and smaller dia muffler than the classics with larger header pipes .. the new classics have removal baffles and fibreglass wrapped
what kind of baffles do you have??
The stage three had a deeper rumble but the cobras have a roar that sounds like
they mean business fairly quiet on idle and cruising
how do yours sound??

It is raining and ice pellets today so i have got time to yap

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/05/21 12:28

Yeah. It's raining off and on here too. Went to Home depot and got some stock and made a set of saddlebag supports for my new bags. Cost $25 compared to $70 or $80 for store bought. Can't see paying for chrome supports that are always hid behind the bags.

I have what ever baffles come in the shotguns. They aren't removable as far as I know. Isn't much to them. You can see right through the pipes. There's just some spiral doo dads at the end of the pipe. (Hows that for technical) If I had to describe it I would say it looks like 1/2 inch cable that is spiraled around the inside of the pipe for about a foot. I'm sure someone that knows what they are talking about can tell you what it is . I think they sound perfect. Couldn't be happier. Their loud but not obnoxious. I'd like to fill up the tank and hit the country roads till it's dry and check my mileage now but I don't feel like getting stuck in the rain out in the middle of cornfield county.
