oil question 2 Years, 7 Months ago
several weeks ago I posted a question about o rings leaking from the oil tube to the oil tank, it was leaking from the bottom. ( the chrome one)

I replaced the o ring on the top and the bottom still is leaking.
But that is not the question I will bring it to the shop to see what they say.

The question is when I was putting oil back in the bike I over filled it. I tried loosening the drain bolt and letting out oil slow, it did not work and bolt fell and oil poured into catch pan.
When I put back the oil I put it all back minus what spilled on my hands and I left just a little out to compensate for the over filling.
I started the bike and let the oil heat up. I waited five minutes and checked oil.
It is only a third of the way up the stick. Considering that it was a 1/16" inch over the fill. line I could not have lost that much oil on my hands and I only left about a 10th of a litter on the bottle.
Where did all the oil go? Strange.
Also maybe now that it is not over filled the o ring won't leak from the chrome tube I will have to wait till tomorrow to check it out.

Can anyone tell me why there is a big difference in oil levels after I put back the oil?

Also while putting back the oil it would not go down fill hole, I had to start
the bike and then it went down. I figured it might have been a vacume there was
still oil in the crankcase I never drained that just the oil pan.

Any ideas?

Ron

Your observations are not uncommon.

Fill it up, check the stick, check it again later and it reads different.

The tank holds the oil so I don't know if it's that important that you get an accurate reading on the dipstick.

I drain the oil, change the filter, add 4.3 qt and button it up. Mine doesn't leak or burn so I've quite worrying about where the dipstick reads. I know it has enough oil.

BTW .... from your post I'm not sure whether you know it but you cannot add the 4 qts at once. You have to add 2, replace the dipstick, start it up for a couple of secs and then add the rest of the oil.

Hi Doc
A few weeks ago I found a leak from the rear oil pipe the chrome pipe and a leak from the oil delivery hose.
So I drained the oil and replace the o rings.
When I refilled the oil I followed the correct methode added 2.6 stated bike then reved it shut it down added the rest. But I put to much in.
So I drained the oil pan and then put the oil back.Since there was oil already in the crank case I just added oil but it would not go down the filler tube under seat. I thought a vacume might have been created I put the dip stick back started bike and then it went down.
My oil lever says just a little over a 1/3 on the stick. it was over the full line before.

Anyway I still have a leak in the oil tank pipe and the oil delevery hose, this after replacing the o rings not bad leak but it is there. I am at al loss
The o rings were put in correctly as a matter of fact the old ones did not look bad.
I am wondering if the two pipe fittings could have gotten damaged when my bike overheated or the oil pan cover might have cracked from heat.
The oil pan cover is what the oil pipe bolts on to.
Do you have any thoughts? Have you noticed any oil leaking on your bike from that area?

Thanks
Ron

No, mine tight as a drum but I'll check again later today.

Can't think of why yours would leak. Maybe the flange on the tube is bent slightly but I don't know how that would occur. Did it leak from Day 1?

Have you thought of trying the same size O-ring but thicker?
