Loss of power? 4 Years, 4 Months ago
Ok, I have a 2003 roadie with k&n filter, dyna 3000 and vance hines longshots with the baffles removed. The bike has 12500 miles on it. I bought the bike with 11,000 miles and the exhaust tone sounded real strong for a while and the performance was great. The air filter has been cleaned and recharged with a light spray oof oil.I changed the oil to royal purple 10-40 and I used to put 93 octane but went down to 87. I ran seafoam through the tank a couple of times and I changed the spark plugs. I think they are autolite from Autozone. Ever since I did all of this I feel as if the bike has lost power and the exhaust tone is sounding real flattered instead of a stiff hard tone like it used to.When I changed the oil, I put 4.3 quarts in and the oil started coming out of the air filter if I got down on the throttle hard. I did not mess with the dyna 3000 and do not know how to mess with it. My question is, do you think something enternal are something I did might be causing the feeling of loss power?

Besides a "feeling" of power loss, does it have any more symptoms? If the motor internally is stock , stick with the 87 octane. You can also lower your oil to 4 quarts total for your oil changes, it's perfectly safe and will probably reduce that oil bath you got. Try changing the plugs back to an NGK DPR7EA-9. The Dyna 3000 is adjustable, Maybe it shifted and changed the settings , unlikely but possible. It has a series of throw switches on the back of it so you can change the ignition curve, and the settings are on the back of it. You will have to pull it out to view it , unless the PO cut an access hole in the battery box to make changes with. Some thoughts to get you started with. BB

The engine does make a sewing machine type noise but I read in other posts that this is normal. It is not an abnoxious soungjust a sound almost like a sewing machine. Bike burns no oil, no smoke. Maybe it's just in my head. No, It's not in my head, something has changed !! Thanks for the reply big bear.

Dyna link :http://www.dynaonline.com/english/instruct/D3K7-3.pdf

Here's a reference to the settings found on the back of the Dyna. With the 1600 , you will need to keep the RPMS to 5000 max, for the safety of the motor. BB

It's getting near bed time here, so..... Here's a couple more tips. Check everything. Spark plug wires , change the plugs, exhaust for any leaks around the head/mufflers , use starting fluid and lightly spray around the carb boot for vacuum leaks. How do the plugs look? White , tan , or black? Not always the place to find the answer , but could be a clue. It Would not hurt to know exactly how it's jetted either, as it could be too rich (or lean , but it's typically rich with these bikes) which will cause the problems you speak of as it "loads" up. Do you know its history? If you don't , you may have to get Intimately acquainted with your scoot. Some more thoughts. BB

Is it a K&N in the stock airbox or an open K&N filter? Did you jet? When you drained the oil did you drin both 17mm plugs?

I did not find the Autolite plugs as good as the OEM plugs.

Pull each plug off, check the boots, put some dielectric grease in the in the boot and reattach. If you have access to a plug tester it would be a good idea to check if the plugs are working.

I did not check the plugs yet but I bought the ngk plugs to put back in the bike. I do have the open k&n air filter. I had a vstar 1100 and I feel like it had more power than my Roadstar. The PO said that the carb was jetted but I do not know if this is true or how to find out if it is true. I will check the Dyna settings tonight and some of the other tips you guys gave. Going to Daytona Bike week in March and I need to get the roadie right to REPRESENT the road star family. They tell me that in the past, metric owners have found their bikes tied up hanging from trees with the oil drained out of them. I don't just hope they try to take mine, " I WISH ". SOMEONE WILL NEED AN UPDATED HEALTH INSURANCE CARD.

Hope you find your problem. Just a comment about Daytona, I been going for several years, spring and fall riding a 04 midnight star. They haven't messed with mine yet. Can't catch me I guess.

I figured that it was just rumors are maybe a couple of 70's stories. Who knows. Anyway, I am sure that it will be great.
