65 tooth or 70 tooth pulley? 4 Years, 3 Months ago
I would like some help with the pulley decision. I have the 40 spoke wide wheel, billet hubs, and spokes (yes I went with 40 spoke...it has a more retro look) all are HD parts. I know DOC has the technique for putting the stock pulley on the wheel, but I am opting to go with a billet HD pulley. There are a lot to chose from and they are very inexpensive. I need a 1.5inch wide pulley to start, right? And what tooth should I choose, 65 or 70?

Thanks for the help.

70 tooth.

An HD pulley on a R* wheel will not be and exact fit but it does work. You will need to wallow the holes in the pulley just a little.

Oops cancel that ... i just re-read the post and notice you have HD wheels. Everything should bolt up OK.

Are you using a R* axle ????? or did you buy axles.

On the Roadstar Forum, one guy used a HD pully on his stock wheel, he used the 70 tooth that he said was very close to stock R*.

Thanks Doc. I am getting my axles from Lynn when I get all parts together. All I need is to buy tthe pulley and rotor. Then I will call Lynn and get whatever spacers, adapters, etc... By-the-way can I use an HD rotor too? I can get a matching rotor and pulley for around $150.

Rotor is not the same size you you'll have to do a bit of 'custom' work to make it fit.

Lynn will get you spacers but you'll need to cut them to fit your application. He's done tons so he should be able to get you there.

Has anyone tried these or heard anything about them...good or bad...?

I have been thinking about doing this mod to complete the rear in one shot! It would only work out to about $100-$150 more.

I have no experience of this conversion but I have a couple of comments.

1.The all in one chrome pully brake disc looks awesome.

2. I'm not confident that the mechanics in the video were fully qualified to work on a R*

I like the pulley brake setup but like internal mounted disc better but $$$.

With the internal setup you can see the whole pulley.

Agreed all around! I don't think they are R* mechanix. I looked at a set of internal mounted and they ran up to $1700 a set. I like the $1200 savings.
