Transfer Case Oil 4 Years, 3 Months ago
I need to change the Gear Oil in my Bike and was looking through the owners manual and see where the Fill and Check Plug is for it but after looking at the drain plug it seems that it is located on the left side of the bike. I know where the Fill/Check plug is, but looked on the bike for the drain and could not locate it right off, can someone set me straight as to where the drain plug is located.

It's underneath the bike on the right side. It's sorta by the rear oil drain plug but the bolt head is smaller.

The drain bolt is on the bottom side of the transfer case, and if I remember correctly it’s a 12mm.

80W-90 GL4 Hypoid Gear Oil is the way to go. I use 15oz, it’s a little more than Yamaha recommend but it doesn’t do any arm. Yam recommend changing it each 16,000 miles but I change it each spring, again it’s so simple and doesn’t do any arm.

I use Pennzoil and/or Castrol, but heard AMSOIL is very good also, there is many other good brand out there.

GL4??? Where are you guys getting GL4? I went to 3 auto parts stores and the only GL4 lube was store or off brands. I wound up buying Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W-90 GL5. I have heard this could cause problems with the brass inside the transfer case???? Two of the stores assured me that the GL5 was compatible with GL4 applications. I am not sure???
I think others have said they are using the Mobil 1 Synthetic, so I bought it. I like the Mobil 1 V Twin in the motor. I have not changed the transfer case yet so I have time to get the right stuff if this is not good for our application. The last time I changed the transfer case the dealer sold me Spectra Gold, 80 weight gear lube, and I looked at it again and it has no GL rating at all on the container.
I am so confused!!!

I went to the Mobil Oil site and found that the Mobil 1 Synthetic is compatible with GL4. I feel better now and will be Mobil 1 all the way.
Link to the information on the site.

Think I’m gonna go with this baby, AMSOIL synt, it’s compatible with API GL-4 requirements. For me it will be AMSOIL synt all the way.
