Doc,
Great looking bike you have. I have a 2005 RS, blk cherry with V&H longshots HS pipes that were on the bike when I bought it. I put on a Yamaha flamed air cover with the K&N filter, the air box is stock. I have not done anything to the carb (yet) and the bike runs great. It starts with no choke and I am able to ride away within 2 minutes of warm up. Keep in mind that I live in southwest Florida with warm weather most of the time. However when I do start it I get a small puff of black smoke from the pipes. And I do get the occasional back fire through the carb when I blip the throttle at a stop. The AIS is intact but no back firing on decel. I would figure that the bike would be alittle on the lean side but does not seem to be the case. I can run it thru the gears without any stumble and have reach over 100mph on I75. Since it seems to runs good what should I expect to see if I drop the carb ( as far as jet size and needle position). Your thoughts ?
Gary

Gary,

Even in hot Florida you should have to use some choke and the puffs of black smoke indicate to me that you are a bit rich.

The main jet (Milkuni 182.5) is quite large on the 05 and usually a smaller one can be used when putting on a freer flowing intake and exhaust. You're probably quite close with your current setup.

Although with the stock carb setup you can change jets, you cannot change the position of the needle - it only has one clip. If you want to start tuning your carb you will need to buy a jet kit, either from a DJ or Mikuni. I'm biased towards the Baron's jet kit.

For the time being try adjusting your PMS in about 1/4 turn at a time.

As you can see from vegasdave's experience, once you start it can become a slippery slope

Gary, you're lucky you have no backfire with the AIS still intact. When I changed my air box and pipes, I still had not plugged the AIS & the backfiring through the pipes sounded like a shotgun blast. After plugging the AIS system, all was well. BTW, welcome to the clinic...

Doc, Big Al,
Thanks for your replie. I got a call today from the dealer that sold me the bike and low and behold they had the manual for the bike. The dealer installed the pipes and a jet kit. Though I don't know what they installed as far as brand of jet kit. I am going to pull the carb when I get some time to see what is in as far as jet size and needle. And as far as the back fire I guess I just lucked out. Though I do want to remove the AIS. I'll make my own flanges at work. I have a full machine shop to make all kinds of goodies Thanks again for the response.......Gary
