Air filter repeat post 4 Years, 3 Months ago
Coach Dan was kind enough to send me a stock air filter box that I needed. Well i got around to putting it on and went to put my K&N filter and to my suprise the stock air filter was separating from the bottom plastic plate. I have written in about this before as it was the reason I switched to the K&N. So again I am giving the warning to all out there running the stock filter GET RID OF IT before you suck in enough dirt to damage the engine. This filter was not very old and neither was mine before I swapped it out.

Mine was separating too , when I examined it , as I was installing a BAK. For the cost of that sucker , you'd think they would use a little more glue , huh ? BB

Never had any issue with the stock filter but I was planning to switch to the K&N YA-1699
washable filter anyway!

I reported on this again because I feel it is an important faux pas by Yamaha. Being of the mechanical trades I can tell you for sure that this issue can for sure wreck a perfectly good engine. After my las post I tried to talk to Yami rep about it adn all he had to say was it was an solated issue never heard of it before. We now I have seen two. He also said that it would be of little harm (what a crock).

I agree Helmut he just did not want to do the work or admit to a problem that's what the majority says these days no one wants to get into really trying to get something right when they are working for a big company or Corp. He should have at least said to you I will look into it because if there is a problem we want to know. Thanks now I have the opportunity to look at mine & maybe prevent a major problem. Charlie

I never had that problem with the stock filter but I did not leave it on long enough to find out, I installed the Speedstar Air Filter with the K&N filter and Samson Rolled Thunder Slip on Pipes to open it up some and let it breathe better. I feel that the stock set up is too restrictive.

Hey guys,

I don’t want in any way defend Yamaha or any of their subcontractors but I’ve replaced my stock filter for the third time last May and nothing was unglued in there. You guys must have stumbled on a defective batch, shi… happens.

But even if the damn filter would have a ~ 1/32" gap from the bottom plastic plate, wouldn’t’ it be held firmly in place with the front chrome cover screw? When I disassembled mine, the whole thing seem very sturdily fitted, so I don’t see how the filter could budge an iota in that tight space filter box and therefore allow dirt getting into the engine.

If I would of found my stock air filter defective, at 50$ a pop, I can assure you that I would of have had a nice and friendly conversation with the stealer!

Anyway I intended to get a washable K&N filter for my next one. I heard it gets a lot less expensive in the long run.

[file] I never had issue with the stock air filter's fit or quality of manufacture but have taken issue with the price. I have recently purchased the Speedstar Air kit with the K&N filter because it makes sense over the long run to have filters that are cleanable. and not just a $50 paper towel.

In response to warnings from previous posts, I pulled my air filter off, and although total separation had not occurred, the end plate and filter media looked as though they were ready to go their separate ways. I put a bead of RTV around the edge of the plate and reinstalled. On subsequent replacements, I'll do the same thing using a good epoxy.
