2005 R* Checklist 4 Years, 3 Months ago
Hey,

Just bought a 2005 R*. Been lookin around here and realize that this is THE place. What should I look for or do when I get this bike. The bike has just under 3000 mi. on it. What maintenance would you all suggest?
BTW.... do you HAVE to remove the gas tank to do the AIS on the 2005? What would be the best components to use to lower this baby?

Thanks, Dan

I have an 05 with just over 10,000miles bought with just 300 on her. If you don't know what has been done to it I recommend change the oil out switch to synthetic oil like Mobil 1 Vtwin or Amsoil(what I used) Change the plugs (they are probably good but it doesn't hurt) And run some Seafoam in the gas (helps keep SVS at bay)
I recommend removing the tank to remove the AIS it is much easier to work on and you won't accidentally damage the tank.
Barons makes a lowering kit for the R* check it out here Barons lowering kit
or you can lower it by flipping the dog bone FREEBEE! Check the tech page for details
You will need to upgrade your spring if you do lower it though

Good Luck The R* is a GREAT bike......now hide your wallet!!

Congrats on the Roadie Dan. I also just bought a 2005 Roadie almost 2 weeks ago with 2700 miles on it. Who keeps bikes that long and doesn't ride them? Anyway, I went ahead and changed the oil, even though mine came with Mobil 1 already in it and I also changed the plugs. I haven't used Seafoam yet, but will do soon. I've been having too much fun to stop and pick up the Seafoam. AIS was already removed from mine. It came with Cobra Speedster slashdowns (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) and Kury Pro-R Hypercharger. I rode a similar bike with stock air intake and exhaust and they responded completely differently. I can't say enough about the sound of the Cobra Speedsters. I spent a lot of time researching and listening to different pipes before I bought Speedster Longs for the V-Star 1100 I have (now sitting in the garage collecting dust) and was thrilled to find a used Roadie that already had Speedsters on it. Enjoy the new bike! I know I am!

Wow An 01 to an 05 in 5 months Did you ever get the grips of the other one? You don't absolutely have to take the tank off but by the time you get done trying to do it the easy way you've worked harder and taken longer. Definitely run some Seafoam through it and change oil & plugs.

Welcome to the Clinic and Congrats on the Bike, I bought my 05 Roadstar 6 months ago with 515 miles on her, I recently did the oil and filter change and changed out the Gear Box Oil also, I have not had a single problem with the bike so far, I did add my accessories and dressed her up like I wanted also. You can go to www.yamaha-motor.com and register on that site and you can access the owners manual and all info pertaining to the bike, you can buy accessories also, it has a link to Star Touring which is a Club for all Yamaha Star Motorcycle Owners.

You know I never got a real chance to do anything with the '01'. A deal came up for a Big Dog I could not pass up. Guess what? Wish I had. The feel of the bike was just not me. Don't get me wrong...they are one killer looking bikes just not confortable enough me. The one thing I do remember about the R* was the ride. So.....I came back to finish what I started.
