Crash / Forward 5 Years, 11 Months ago

Have a question for any fabricator / creative people out there. Maybe someone with access to CAD. It seems to be a universal question no matter what bike you own. "Can I put crash bars and forward controls on my bike?"
So here's my question - Is it possible to design crash bars with integral forward controls? I would think if it can be done there would be a huge hole in the market that could be filled that no one else is touching. Or has this already been kicked around and buried?

What are crash bars.
Interesting concept. I'll have to look at my FCs and see where they line up.
The only problem I envison is that you may have more difficulty moving your foot laterally quickly 'cause the bar would be in the way. You would have to move you foot back before moving it sideways.

I looked at a few pics of bikes with forwards including my last bike. Kind of all over the place with how far forward the forwards are so it seems there is latitude there. How about a narrow crash bar(Doesn't stick out as far) with the controls on the outside of the bar? Like highway pegs but not as far out. A bar that only comes half way down with the forwards below? I know with both those ideas you would lose the forward control on what ever side you went down on but you would still save alot. Or a regular size bar with the controls on the inside. That would be best because you would aslo get some leg protection out of it. Don't know. Just kicking around the idea.

I've got the Yamaha big bar on mine and the bar pretty much lines up with your toes. I don't think there would be enough room on it to put a control on the inside. I've seen pictures of some Harley police bikes with pegs (not controls) mounted on the inside of the bar. It must be a pretty big bar though.
I mounted some Kuryakyn pegs on my bar (outside) and am able to put my toes on the pegs while keeping my heels on the floorboards. Quite comfy!

The FC on the outside is a good idea as the FC on the inside means you may have a problem getting your foot out when going down. You don't want to be caught with you leg under the bike.
The only problem with outside is if you go down and the FC folds you may get your foot caught between the FC and the bar but I think it's still better than inside.
A bar the only goes halfway down ..... hmmm .... then the FCs and crash bar are two pieces.
Now it's up to you to pull out the tube bender and welder and make some prototypes.

Hey Greeny
I agree it probably wouldn't work with existing bars. It would have to be a from the ground up design. And then it might end up being a compromise between the 2 and doesn't do either well. In which case it's junk before it gets built.

That could happen.
"A bar the only goes halfway down ..... hmmm .... then the FCs and crash bar are two pieces."
It could be. I was thinking more along the lines of having them both mounted on a base that gets mounted to the frame. It would pretty much bolt on top and bottom almost like regular bars.
"Now it's up to you to pull out the tube bender and welder and make some prototypes."
CRAP! I did it again didn't I?
