I came to the Roadie from a water cooled bike, the engine noise got my attention in the beginning also. It has a different sound than my Honda. But I have grown to love it!

Hey guys, I bought an 05 Silverado about 6 months ago and love the bike. The only 2 complaints about it is the really obnoxious engine noise after it warms up and the steering head has a pretty bad clunk in it when I hit bumps.
The engine noise happens after it warms up and sounds almost like a rod knocking. I don't think it is cuz it runs real good and doesn't have too bad of vibration. Could it be an out of adjustment valve or is there anything else to do to help quiet this thing down.
As for the steering head what do I need to do to tighten up this thing so it doesn't tear something up down the road.

Thanks for any input.

The character of a big V-twin is a little talk from the motor

What you call obnoxious is music to MY ears...

An air cooled V-twin the size of the R* is going to talk to you...

The explosions in the Cyl head and the resulting noise are not muted like in a water cooled motor..

Good oil will quiet it down somewhat...

If you come from riding a British air cooled bike or a Harley
the R* is QUIET ..

If you are used to a Honda Shadow Liquid cooled bike or even a Goldwing the the R* is going to be noisy...

IT is the character of the R*.....which all of us who have one... have learned to luv...

I just loves the big V Twin, mine sounds like a tractor... you can just about hear all the parts moving.
Compared to the sewing machine sound on my stock standard pipes on the FJR the Roadiee is just music to my ears... albeit Hard rock music..

Ok I'll try the Mobile 1 20w50 next oil change. As for the front end I took the bike to my mechanic and he didn't even get out of the parking lot and came back telling me it was the steering head loose. I just thought I might be able to tackle it. I don't have a manual so is there any where on the net with the step by step instructions to do this.
I do my own work on my race car so I have a basic knowledge around tools and equipment, however having a little knowledge can be dangerous if not applied correctly.

Oh and by the way pop rivet, how'd you get a picture of my bike?

Nice to hear that about your 99....i was trying to figure out how to describe the sound my bike was makin and "sewing machine" is appropriate. Wasnt sure if my 99 was supposed to sound like a sewing machine or not but it does...and it runs smooth....
