Gas Tank Vent 10 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
|
I have a 01 R* that i bought last fall and only was able to put about 2000kms on it before the snow came. But i did notice every time i put gas into her i would get a big gush of air every time i took the gas cap of.So i checked the tank vent and it seems to be plugged so i went ahead and done the gas cap mod that i saw here in the tech articles and there is no pressure built up now and everything seems fine. But the weather here is still bad and i can't get a chance to try it, so i'am wondering if gas is going to leak from the cap now that the rubbers are removed from the cap? Is it going to leak gas if i got to break hard or take of quick? Should i only fill it to a couple of inches from the top which i usually do anyway. Thanks

When I installed a new gas cap I had some gas weeping out .... even though I don't fill to the top.
You'll have to keep an eye out and if it doesn't work for you I can instruct how to modify the vent tube.
Have you removed the rollover valve?

Thanks, the rollover valve is still there and i'am waiting for a new one from the dealer. It was a recall on the eariler models he said.
But when i tried to blow compressed air into the tank vent with the cap of nothing came through, even tried spraying rust check and wd40 and let it soak for days.Blew through the evap system and all the plumbing that is part of the system and everything is clear. So thats why i did the cap mod.
I would be interested in finding out how to modify the vent tube,i rather have the gas cap working right than to have a gas spill over a hot exhaust someday.

This is the second time I've heard about a recall on a rollover valve. I have a 2000 Roadie. Does anyone have information on this recall, what years were affected? I had a problem a few weeks ago, and I was told to check the rollover valve. But if there was a recall, I'd like to know about it.

I just went to the dealer being aware of the transmission recall before i bought the bike, and when he checked the serial# that's what he told me. So they ordered me one, mines an 01.

Yes ... trash the rollover valve. You can put a gas filter in it's place if you wish.
The vent hole is very small so it's hard to determine if it's plugged or not. No you can't used a fine wire to clean it as inside the tank, the vent exits through the side of the vent tube.
To modify the tank vent (not for the faint of heart) .....
- take a pair pliers and straighter the vent out (don't bend it back and forth or it will break off)
- get a drill bit slightly larger than the vent hole
- drill all the way through (don't break the fine bit ... I did )
- rebend the vent the same way
You will be creating a hole in the end of the tube.

I did the gas cap mod a couple years ago & have not had any troubles with spillage. I tend to try and squeeze in every last drop of fuel I can when I fill up too ! There has been a few times where I filled it up so full that I thought it might start to leak when I took the bike off the side stand, but no problems so far.

I vented my gas cap and removed the rollover valve at the same time. I used the foam paintbrush mod for the fuel vent.
I fill my fuel tank as recommended in the manual and have never experienced leakage or any gas smell.
