Fuel Gauge 2 Years, 6 Months ago
My fuel gauge just started to not read all the way full.(I`d say 1/2 gallon off)
It happened after I ran my tank down past the reserve, but not all the way empty.
Any suggestions?(seems to read fine after about a gallon is gone.)

It could be the fuel sender gone bad. Try taking it all the way to empty again or just empty your fuel via the petcock into a container, switch on your bike and see where it reads. Then fill her up again & see where your gauge sits.

Try disconecting the battery for a few hours and then reconnect it and check thew gauge. I did that and it now reads correctly.

You know I've noticed (Or thought I noticed) that since I've tapped holes in the fill neck of my gas tank, and have started adding an extra 1/4 gallon of gas the fuel gauge has "adjusted" and now seems to read correctly - you'd think that with the extra 1/4 of fuel it would just stay on full longer, but it SEEMS to have changed... so you may have something about disconnecting the battery IF the bike uses a computer to set the gas gauge... I'm not sure how it's set up... but with your sucess with disconnecting the battery and my thinking the gas gauge has adjusted... maybe yamaha does use some type of computer control for the adjustment... I wonder if there is anyone out there who never lets his tank get below 1/2 if the gauge would reach empty earlier ... they might see it as "oh my gosh, I used to go 100 miles before I'd add gas now I can only go 75" ... but I'm speculating ~Guido

This site is amazing... I just finished a 1000 mile trip to the Mid West Star-B-Q in Madison, WI and on the way back I started having the fuel guage problem.

Mine reads empty right after I fill the tank - as soon as I run about 25 miles the guage reads normally and will continue to be accurate until I fill up again.

I will try the battery trick and get back to everyone.

Thanks to all, have filled up several times and always reads about a gallon short.
Just got to work and the gauge light just came on.Gonna run it past the reserve again and see what happens( Big Al).If that don`t work will try the battery suggestion(wirkinman),or do you guys think just unplugging the sensor might work? Later!

Very interesting! My fuel gauge is screwing up too. All the sending unit is is a variable resistor. If the contacts become tarnished it will shift the resistance values and cause gauge error. I think I'll pull my sending unit again and clean it.
