Starting / Charging Issue 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
OK, this one came at me from left field.

Fired up the bike this morning and let it do it's thing for the required 9-10 min. before heading out for a short ride to meet some folks. After a 20 min. ride to my destination I entered the parking lot and saw one of the folks I was meeting. I pulled up next to him in the truck and shut the bike down by hitting the kill switch so we could talk. I also cut power by switching the key to OFF. We chatted for maybe 30 seconds and I went to start the bike so I could move it to a parking spot: Key ON, hit the starter and it caught for like 1 second(literally) and then everything just died.

No lights, no horn, no turn signals, no speedo activity, no "nuttin". I thought I'd blown the main fuse, but it was fine. All other fuses fine as well.

I pulled the seat and put a set of jumper cables on it and then crossed them just to see if I had any juice in the battery and nothing.

I'm assuming that the batter is a goner. But I've never seen a bad battery have enough juice to start the bike after sitting for 2 days, but then after being run for 20-25 min. be dead as a door nail. It doesn't make me feel any better that I "think" I hear strange noises coming from the left side of the case near where I think the generator is located.

My plan is to get a new battery and see if that resolves my problem, and I really hope it does.

Anybody ever had something like this happen to them? Any other ideas?

Thanks,

M7

I'd check all the connections first before buying the battery, doesn't take much corrosion to kill a connection or something may just be loose??

Connections (on the battery at least) are clean and tight...

How did you get it home..?If you jumped it off with a dead battery and were able to ride it then that's a pretty good indication that the gen is working..if you have the original battery, wouldn't hurt to get a new one...

I did ride it home after letting it roll down a slight hill and me popping the clutch in 2nd gear.

And yeah, riding it home once it fired up leads me to believe that the gen. is doing it's job. Might just me be paranoid. These motors are noisy little things anyway. So, guess it's a new battery for me.

Take a look in the service manual. Theres more than just the connections on the battery.

Take it and have it checked before buying one .... a battery can appear good until its got a load on it when one cell is bad ...and as far as a battery starting just fine and then dead as a door nail ...well thats just life bud <grin>...hope it all works out.....Coug
