As you turn the PMS (leaner) in you should experience on deceleration.

The rear usually runs richer on the stock so I'm guessing #1 and 2 are the rear cylinder ???

The centre electrode tip and the threaded portion indicate the condition of the idle circuit. The blacker .... the richer.

The ground strap should change colour as it does in #2 and 4.

The centre electrode shows the condition at WOT. Your seem to be richer int #1 and 2 and leaner in 3 and 4 at WOT.

As for why they are different .... beats me Maybe the plugs are not getting an equal charge from the coils. ???

Thanks Doc
I've read about people wrapping the coils in some kind of tape or something. Do you think this might help? I know I'm asking blind questions here. I wish I could just get normal problems that people have had and know what to do about. Kind of ticks me off on a 4 month old bike. Thanmks again for the help.

I wasnt able to view your pictures of your plugs. I do know from exprience that the rear cylinder will run richer at lower speeds. How many miles on yout Roadie?
Have you ever had the valves set? As for the plug color differance in each cylinder, I would try a new set of plugs.

I put new plugs in today when I pulled the old ones. I haven't looked at mileage for a while but a guess would be 1300. The pictures aren't a clickable link. You need to do a copy and paste to the address bar. The only motor work is whatever the 600 mile service covers but then again it was done where I bought it and I have little faith in the mechanics there. The short trips I do are probably at a 60 mph average but they are only about 3 1/2 miles. To and from work.

People, including myself, wrap the coils in dielectric tape 'cause the stock coils were prone to arcing to the frame.

In a dark place, start the bike up and look under the tank at the coils. If you see a light show then you need to wrap them or buy an aftermarket set (Dyna).

You have 'normal' problems and I'm sure that they're no more than any other bike. As you tinker by adding on aftermarket 'goodies' you'll have more of these 'problems'. It's the nature of the beast.

A you are probably aware, those short trips are hard on any vehicle. The bike has hardly warmed up for your area! As tomorrow is a holiday, take a ride to the Alexandria Lakes. That should blow out the carbon.

Re:Black plugs 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Actually today is a holiday too. Had to work Saturday so I took today off. But the sky isn't looking friendly. I can't think of anything I have done that would cause 4 plugs out of the same motor to all look completly different. If the 2 worst (1&2) are from the back and the 2 cleanest (3&4) are from the front then there seems to be more than a little difference between the 2 cylinders. Maybe I'm expecting too much. I did this to my last bike and evrything was fine but this bike ain't that bike. No denying I'm at best a novice wrench. I'm not going to sweat it. It's Yamahas fault for putting that huge stock exhaust on there to begin with. If they would have used a 2 into one I probably wouldn't have changed anything. Double edge sword. More work allowed me to buy this bike but now I don't have as much time to ride. I'll have to find time to blow it out at least once a week. And now I'm past the first time fears so I'll just keep playing with the carb. Like I said, I'm not gonna sweat it. Thanks everyone. Im going riding.

Don't want to trivialize your problems but sometimes we tend to focus too much on the small things.

As I said, most people see a difference between the back and front plugs. Within the same cylinder

Try posting on the Forum and see what opinions you get there.

Just got back from a trip so I think I'll also try and get the bike out today.

You're right. Guilty as charged. OK,I've tried going riding twice today and both times it's started raining between getting on the elevator and getting to my bike. Blue sky now. I'm outta here. Hope you get yours out too.
