As Doc says, "It's that simple", but if you're still fearful, here's the tutorial:

Place a pan or container under the transfer case drain bolt area.

Remove the straight plug (aka filler plug, which looks like a plug with a large screwdriver slot).

Remove the check bolt (the little bolt directly beneath the straight plug).

Remove the drain plug underneath the transfer case.

Insert the drain plug and torque to spec.

Fill transfer case through the filler hole until gear lube begins to flow out of check bolt hole. STOP filling.

Insert check bolt and torque to spec.

Insert straight plug.

Clean up.

You're done.

Now, does this sound like something you can do all by yourself?

Good luck, brother.Post edited by: 06MidnightStar, at: 2007/04/25 19:01

I wanted to do this too...do you have the bike level when you fill it back up? I'm guessing yes??? You don't wan't it resting on the kickstand when you add or drain the oil, correct?

Jeff--

That is my supposition. I believe that if it is not upright it may not drain properly.

You're making this very difficult for my wife...now she has to balance the bike with one hand while opening the drain plug, etc. with the other. I fear she will not like you too much when I tell her this

Thanks!

Actually, the only thing my wife truly understands about my bikes is that it is her job to balance it when I am changing something on it! LOL

The Sears Craftsman motorcycle jacks go on sale periodically. I paid $100 for mine, but it you're patient you can pick one up for $70-80.

Another other option, which I've used, it a 3-inch piece of 4x4 pressure-treated lumber under the kickstand. If you turn your forks to the left, it provides enough lean to keep the bike upright, but is close enough to level to do your fluid changes. It helps if you work from the right side of the bike with this option - insurance in case the bike gets bumped and decides to find mother earth!

Good luck.

I have a Sears jack...grabbed it for $59.99 on sale last year. I hate to let the wife use it though, she always gets it dirty and complains that her knee hurts pumping it up the full 17"
