coincidence or screw up? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
i have a 2005 roadstar 1700 with 900 miles and wanted just a little throaty sound in the stock exhaust and decided to try a stage 1 exhaust mod, with variation due to not having a dremel tool and not cutting the cone off. drilled about 4 1/3 in holes in each pipe. when i went to start the bike, it turned over but didnt start. i reached down to turn choke on and then attempted to start it again, but the starter justed clicked and the power seemed to short out. did i screw something up with the bike or is it just a conicidence that the starter messed up. guess ill have to load it on a trailer and haul it in to the dealer! didnt remove the pipe to drill. what do you'all think?

This sounds like coincidence to me. There is nothing in what you have done that should have caused your bike not to start.

I would suggest checking battery charge first. Another more remote possibility is starter failure, but you won't really know until you try to start it with a fully charged battery. See if you can get your hands on a trickle charger and really be sure it is well charged. Then try again.

Can you explain the 'power short out' part a little better? What happened?

I am going with definite co-incidence! I did the same thing to my 05 before going the full remove cone, dremel, drill routine and it was fine...an 05 with 900 miles is not being ridden alot and I suspect the battery was just low I just did the 8000 mile service on my 05!

Regards, Ted

I had that happen on my '04. Check the battery terminals for corrosion and tightness. Mine were loose. No start that way. Also check all the connections onthe starter and the grounds.

I agree with widetrack. I washed my bike and dried it off with a blower. Went to crank it up and nothing but a click. Figured it must be the battery. Just tightened the battery connection on the ground post and everything was back to normal!

I would highly recommend the "battery tender" product. I have used one on my 04 for over a year. I keep it plugged in whenever I'm not riding.
