Ok....It's time for me to do the valve adjustment, and I must admit I'm scared to death. Anyone else out there done it? Is it easy or hard? I was considering taking it to a stealer.......until one told me it would cost $400. I know there are good instructions on here on how to do it, but it seems overwhelming....Someone calm my nerves!

I'm in the same boat and have posted several times about my terror, but the instructions and diagrams here are the forum are pretty darned good. I bought a dial gauge and magnetic mount and am just waiting for a weekend with plenty of free time. I have a buddy who has rebuilt a few metric engines who said he'd come over and keep me calm...and smoke a nice cigar while I do the work.

The advise I've gotten both here (RSC) and at the Road Star Riders forum is not to do it unless you have obvious valve noise. That was last summer. I've now got over 21,000 miles on the bike and still haven't done it and the motor doesn't sound any different than the day I bought it with only 1,600 miles.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge (aka, a mechanic) of the Road Star motor will jump in and clarify this though.....

Aaron

If it ain't broke; don't fix it! My R* has over 35,800 miles. Looks, feels, smells, sounds fine!

Aaron's right .... no need to go in and do it unless you hear them. I've always been an advocate of listening to your motor since I was stranded in the middle of the prairies by a valve that I neglected to adjust. Being my first bike I kept thinking 'it's starting making some noise but so what'.

But I wander ... ....

If you have not worked on engines it not something that you cannot do but it would be better to have someone beside you .. like SobaCraka is going to do.

Some of the Allen bolts are tricky to get to so have a set of ball head Allen wrenches handy. When you take of the cover watch for the dowel pins ... they sometimes stick to the cover and have a habit of falling out as you lift the cover away.

Expect to go into and have to do it again, that way you'll be pleased with yourself when you get it right the first time.

BlkCherryBomb,

I'm with Doc and the others about not adjusting the valves unless they are definitely getting noisier. I've got over 21,000 miles on mine, and there is a bit more noise in the top end now, so I figure better safe than sorry. I've got the tools and a knowledgeable sidekick at my disposal.

BlkCherrybomb like the others said if it's not making more noise than normal just leave it alone. With that said I did mine at around 22,000 miles, can't remember exact as I didn't write it down,It's not difficult just take your time.As Doc said some of the bolts are close.
I used a regular allen wrench for those. The instructions on this site
are a great help. Take some color markers and colr code the bolts as you take them out.It will help you put them back in the correct place.
Well I'm getting long winded,so if you deceide to do it there's help here if you need it.
