Engine Viabration Issues 9 Months, 2 Weeks ago
OK Road Star Clinic Forumites...Help me out with this one.
I have a 06 Road Star Midnight with the following engine mods:
A Yamaha Star BAK, carb jetted and DG Hard Krome Pipes

I posted my engine vibration problem about six months ago. At that point the bike had 2500 miles on it. The engine itself idles fine...Accelerates fine...And runs like a raped ape! But still the engine vibrates the whole bike. If you’re in 4th gear around 60-65 mph it will make your teeth rattle and as you accelerate and shift into 5th it gets worse. While cruising at 70-80 mph there is a harmonic vibration throughout the whole bike. I took the advice of fellow members on the Road Star Forum and checked the following:

-Carb set-up- Good To Go
-Plugs- Good To Go
-Space your DT Risers away from the triple tree- Done
-I put a rubber spacer between the frame and the rear exhaust bracket

It went to a local dealer and after no satisfaction from them and 3 phone calls to corporate Yamaha I took it to the next closest dealer an hour away from where I live. The bike had about 3200 miles at this point. They were very proactive on finding out what the issue is with the bike. They found the engine mounts were loose and torqued them to factory specs. The vibration was almost gone...noticeably better. They even let me ride a demo bike to compare the vibration. It was very close. The same dealer completed the 4000 mile service. They stated that the engine was over the full mark with oil when they changed it. Now here comes 5000 miles and I could feel it coming back. At 5600 miles it is worse than before. I took the bike back to them and corporate Yamaha tech line wanted them to do the ring free procedure to it since it was found over filled with oil at one point. They said the valves could be carboned up. The dealer spoke with the regional service tech and they decided against it since the plugs were clean and the bike is running perfect. The regional service tech actually rode the bike yesterday and said in his opinion there is an issue with the crank and to replace it.
So I guess my question is has anyone ever had or seen an issue with an out of balance crank. I told my dealer if that they feel that the crank is the issue, then I want a new engine.
What's y'alls cut?
Thanks,
Alan

Hey 1bdstr
It is certainly worth a shot. I would first try to get sometihing in writing about the regional reps opinion. Yamaha can be pretty cheep. I'm sure LAW can vouch for that he has had a terrible time with them all the way to corp. Good Luck and be persistent

You Won't get an engine. The warranty work will cover the crank work. Let them start there. If it cures your woes, it's a done deal. If not, you start throwing sand from there. The rest of your motor is not adversely affected from the out of balance crank. Make "friends" with your service adviser , and suggest to him you're looking forward to keeping in touch with him during the whole process. My thought anyhow. BB

My buddy had this problem on his 05 Silverado at the 25000 mile mark.It would shake so bad at some RPM's he could hardley hold on to the bars.Local dealer looked at everything and could not get rid of the problem. He took it to another dealer who worked with a Yamaha corperate tech and they said to loosen all the engine mount bolts ,let the engine settle loose in the frame then tighten her back up to tourqe specs. He now has 57000 miles with no prblems.Just wonder if they just tightened the bolts for you or tried to loosen them all up and re tourqe?
