AIS Elbow removal?? 9 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have finally decided to join the club and remove the AIS from my 03 R*. However, the bike has been well ridden before this and certain parts are stubborn to move. Just removing the assembly from the frame, we had to drill the screws out!!

We tried pull the elbows out last night but to no avail. No amount of force was even budging them. The heads are off the motor right now so we are working with it free of the frame. We even tried an air hammer on it and NOTHING.

According to the "Night-Sky" directions, they suggest a "cold spray" of freon or something to shrink the metal. Since most guys here have taken it off already, I figured this would be the best place to ask for advice on how to remove a stubborn set! Thanks in advance!

Mark

You're right, there are a multitude of ways to remove them. Whatever works.

Freezing may work. At this point you may need to 'drill' them out. Cut them off and then dremmel one side so that it is thin enough that you can fold one side inside itself.

I just recently took mine out of my 2000 R*. Now mine have been in for 8 years and 58,000 miles so if mine will come out so will yours. I took a piece of 3/8 all thread and removed the thumb screw out of my vice grips and then threaded the 3/8 all thread into the vice grips. I used a home made slide hammer weight. You could even use a large sledge hammer head and put it over the all thread. You may have to use large washers and nuts on the all thread to keep the slide hammer on but it works. It took about 5 hard slams to get mine out. The problem I'm seeing with markdyck is his heads are off the motor so that's going to make it hard to remove. He might be better mounting the heads back to the motor and when the motor is back in the bike then try the method I used.

Put the head in the freezer for about an hour and then try it. I do this with piston wrist pins and crank bearing that are stubborn, it works for them. I dont tink it will hurt your head. What do you guys think? roadhog1

Just got done removing mine from my '03 about 10 minutes ago. Grabbed on with vise-grips and worked 'em out. Stopped a couple of times to line up a wooden dowel and gave it a couple of wacks with a hammer from as many angles as possible. Couple of bottles of beer, lost some skin on the heads and presto....job done. Whole job took about an hour. Time and patience are the key. Don't think I could have done it if they heads were off tho'.

Something you might try. Get a can of air, the kind you clean computers with. That IS freon. Turn it upside down and blast the part. It will freeze and effectively shrink the metal, and it's available at office depot for a few bones. Hope this helps, BB.

Take a pair of vise grips and clamp parallel to the frame. Rotate CW & CCW back & forth twisting until they loosen. Then take a small (12" type) pry bar and leverage against the vise grips and press out just a little ways at a time. CAREFULL of the head fins and any paint!!! Use padding where appropriate. It's not easy but they do come out much easier this way. Let the tools do the work. You can also put a wooden dowel inside so you don't crush the tube when clamping with the vise grips. Sorry -- I should have taken pictures to post when I did it.

welded a vice grip to a slide hammer, because i did not have enough swear words to get mine out.
it did the trick and ive pulled 2 other bikes already, because my dealer can not pull off the AIS
for legal reasons.
