06 With overheated clutch 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Hi All

Just wondering if anyone has experienced a severe clutch overheat in stop and go traffic? My 06 Silverado did just that. I was 10 mins in the traffic when the clutch stopped working and the bike kept trying to take off on it's own.
After I got moving again out of the traffic the clutch worked but just doesnt feel right. I will be going to dealer but I expect some run around. SO I am hoping someone here could give me some possible insite to this issue. The bike only has 1500 miles on it.

Thanks

Is it adjusted correctly? Pretty sure there should be about 1/16th inch at the lever gap for free play. I had this problem on a different bike and after going to 20/50 synthetic oil it never happened again.

There was not much free play from the start. Now about 3/8" to 1/2"

You should only have about 1/16th" to 1/8th" at the lever as Musky said. You should check to see that the clutch cable is not binding. The small amount of free play should be enough to alow the clutch to engage completely. If the cable is getting hung up this will cause the clutch to slip as it is not engaged fully. You may want to lube the inside of the cable with a few drops of light wieght oil. I use gun oil. It is very light and lasts for quite some time. Hope this helps............Gary

Hi All,

New to the board. Been reading for a while now and have found lot's of good info. Did the stage one on the pipes, AIS removal and fuel pump re-lo on my '05. Thanks for the help everyone.

About the clutch. I've noticed that when my bike gets hot there is more play in the lever and the pull seems lighter. When it cools off the play goes back to about 1/8th inch and pull goes back to what it was cold. Should the adjustment be set when hot? Does going to 20/50 synth, like Musky did, get rid of it?

Thanks,

Jeff

No. Yours sounds OK.

Mine just barely touches when cold but there's quite a bit of space when fully warmed up.

Yup you were right. The dealer said the cable was routed wrong right from the factory. From what I saw it would be very hard to have detected it during the PDI.
