forks won't lock 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Today I finally got around to tightening up the front end on my 05 road*.
After putting everything back together I can't get the lock to engage on the forks. What could it possibly be? All I did was take the upper triple tree off and tighten up the locking nuts on the neck. I didn't take the front end off. Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Bomberchamp. Got an 03' myself and to my knowledge the only lock is two holes down in front of the tank for a padlock. The key on mine is only for startin', poppin' the seat and draining the battery.
Maybe someone else will have a better grasp of this.

I just went out and checked mine. '03, locks the front if all the way to the left. Greyphart, are you pushing down on your key and then turning left with the handlebars all the way to the left? Bomberchamp, it sounds like you may be not totally lined up with something. Are the triple trees parallel to each other? also,

Yup. You have to have the bars turned all the way and push down on the key while you turn it to the left to lock.

I agree with silver fox. Sounds like you don't have something together just right.

Never really tried to lock the forks. Never had the occasion to. Now I gotta try it. Thanks.

I lock em everytime I park it. It's easy and a little peace of mind.

If you tighten down the small O ring nuts too much (there are 2 of them).Take the top tree off again and just loosen the top o ring nut one a couple turns and then put the top tree back on. This will fix your problem. I'm sorry I can't remember there names. They are the rings that have notches on the sides and are very thin.

The top triple tree wasn't down tight enough because the last guy who had this thing apart galled up the threads and I couldn't get it tight enough. Now I'm off to find a die to clean them up and order a new top nut. I guess I was the next guy and now it's MY problem.

Does anyone know if you can buy just the shaft that goes into the neck to hold everything together or do I have to buy a whole new lower tree?

You should be able to buy JUST the shaft. I'm buying just a shaft for my new front end.

don't know for sure bomberchamp, the manual shows the lower clamp and shaft as one piece...if so, you may be able to take a die and clean it up....
