tranny pinging noise 5 Years, 10 Months ago
My 2000 Roadie is actually running very good with some minor valve ticking which I will adjust come winter time. However, my current concern is my tranny, which is producing a "pinging" noise, similar to metal hitting metal. Almost sounds like a symbal. Ting ting ting ting. This happens of course, only when in gear and moving. Any thoughts?

Are you sure it's the tranny and not the belt or pulley. Maybe the belt guard.

it's definately coming from the tranny. seems to come from the big cover on the left side. i am thinking either something is a tad loose, or it's time to change the tranny oil. I have no idea when it was last changed. but it does go "ding, ding, ding...", and I hear the same "ding" when I put it into gear.

If you are sure it is coming from the clutch area which is in the left cover, then it would be best to drain your oil and check it before any dreaded damage occurs. Any unknown noises that you find that the bike never made before, especially the clanging metallic kind should not go unchecked.

The 2000 R*s were not affected by the transmission recall but they did have a problem with a weak oil pump gear.

It might be worth the trouble to open it up and check 'what's what' and at the same time switch out the gear if it hasn't been done.

It only took me about 2-3 h total (with a rest break )

OK, figured some stuff out! the noise wasn't coming from the tranny, or clutch. It is or was coming from the pulley assembly. I have one of those aftermarket assemblies that you can see move as the belt moves. I removed it, checked around in there, and a small nut fell to the ground. Not sure where it was but, I may not want to know. I am hoping that removing, re-tightening everything may help. It may also be a loose belt although it seems OK. I will try tomorrow and fill you guys in on it.

UPDATE : tranny pinging noise 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Well, OK, I was kinda right, it was coming from the pulley. I removed the after marked moving pulley cover only to discover the actual pulley plate was a little loose. Not having a large socket to tighten it, I went to our local Ottawa custom shop, Dream Cycles. An excellent shop by the way, well worth checking out if ever you are around Ottawa, Ontario. Paul, the mechanic, not only proceeded to tightening the nut, he checked all fuel leves, tires pressure and lights. Now that this is tight, I tell you, I don't recall last time the bike shifted so smooth. This must have been loose for a long time and just got a tad worse.
