Cracked DG HK 3" big straights 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I've had Hard Krome big straights on my bike for almost 4 years. About 2 months ago I noticed a small crack that runs up the bottom pipe about directly underneath the front of the silverado saddlebag. It runs about the full pipe diameter. I don't think I'll buy HK pipes again. To old for a warranty issue. Beware!

Anyone running Samson pipes w/full length heat shields? Whatcha think?

I have a set of samson big guns without the heat shields. They are still in great shape. What to buy them?

I just put a set of Samson "Shogun" Classics on mine. Ebay just under 200 delivered. Very happy with them, LOUD but predrilled for baffles.

I cut my big straights off in front of the crack, measured the length and cut the back to match!!

tapeit59, take it yours cracked about the same place. How did you cut it? Was it a problem cutting the pipe? What did you do with the baffle (assuming you're not running any anymore). What did this do to sound? How does the end look where you cut it. Did you put back on the end cap? Very interested in doing the same thing.

Yes it was cracked, and rashed behind the crack!! Where I made the cut in the front/bottom pipe it did not have 360 degree heatshield I blue taped it and put a hose clamp around it for a guide then I cut it using a cut off wheel in a die grinder. Where I cut the back pipe it had full heat shield so I used a pipe cutter. I measured the baffle and tip insert and cut the pipe back that much further with a dremel and a carbide spiral cutter. I couldn't get all the way through with the dremel, but I got most of the way, then I just kept working the piece of pipe back and forth/up and down till it snapped. Slid in the baffle drilled new hole for set screw... On the front because of it not being full shield I put 2 set screws in the end cap!! REMEMBER TO COVER THE PIPES WITH BLUE TAPE AND WORK ON A TOWEL OR PIECE OF CARPET!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

It's not "what" you ride, it's "that" you ride.

I loved the look and sound of my 3" big straights, but they have begun to rust profusely where the baffle heats up the heat shield. I may have to do this myself...eventually.

Have you tried cleaning your heat shields wet with SOS or BRILLO pads?
