Auxiliary fuel tank? 4 Years, 1 Month ago
|
|
Would it be possible to build an auxiliary fuel tank to gain range, as say, a REAL spare tank?
I was thinking lots of choppers have chin spoilers so could you turn one into a spare tank? I wouldn't be looking for much, maybe one gallon. If this could be done, how would one go about getting the fuel out? Again I was thinking using a vacuum fuel pump for the main tank, and the electric pump for the chin spoiler tank. Would this work, or does it NEED to be gravity fed? And the final problem I could imagine is how would I switch between the tanks?
Any ideas?

Use a gas tank that holds a gallon more. An aux tank is going to mean finding some place for the tank. More hoses. More pumps. More wiring. More plumbing to go wrong and to try and hide. My .003 cents anywho.

Not worth it for one gallon = 40 miles or so.
Besides ... you may need it for all the electricals. Thats why a lot of customs have them.

When I go on long trips with my "HD riding" buddy, he carries a one gallon jerry can on his HD's luggage rack. He alaways runs out of fuel a good 100km's shorter than me. The Roadie has good fuel range of over 300km per tank, and after 300km, I'm ready to stop to get fuel for me and my bike and have a good stretch, and a cold one.

That's about 180mi and the HD is getting about 120mi. If I run a 3.5gal tank I would have an estimated range from 120-140mi down from the 180+ I have right now. It's not a bad loss, not for the serious look, but I'm thinking when I'm in the middle of nowhere... That range is greatly needed sometimes. I figured that one extra gallon might keep me out of trouble. I have intentions of modifying the tank I get though. I think that 13.5in is a little too narrow for the RS (stock is 17in wide) so I'm thinking I might add 2in to that. I wonder how much fuel that might add...?

Get Geico or Foremost Ins. and pay the $8.00 per year for free Roadside Assistance. If ya run out of Gas just give em a call even in the middle of nowhere and they come within an hour with some gas. How do I know this to be true. (dont even ask) Lets just say that I pay $8.00 a year and have used about $300.00 worth of service. I am by know means trying to push Ins. but the respond time with these two have been the quickest not too mention only $430.00 a year full coverage for THREE bikes and THREE riders. Shoot thats in So. Cal. to boot. OSO

The Kawasaki Vulcans and Boulevards have a chamber for the exhaust system under the bike. If the exhaust system is changed then that space is available for something else. There is a company that makes an aux tank for those bikes. The carb models have a fuel pump like the R* and they use that pump to feed the engine directly from the aux tank. The injected bikes have a submerged pump in the main tank; for those there is a pumpm to transfer the aux fuel to the main tank.
I don't know of any other bike that has a convenient place to put an aux tank.

The location was an issue I was trying to figure out. That's why I was thinking of building a chip spoiler, but if Doc's right, I'll need it for wiring. If I can fin a place for wiring, I can use it though. The other option is not getting a smaller tank and stretching my stock tank, possibly even INCREASING fuel capacity in it.
I can't find what the stock tank would look like if I moved it forward a few inches, and pulled the back into a point at the seat. Anyone with photoshop available?
