brake fluid: bleed or top off? 2 Years, 5 Months ago
Hello,

My front brake is starting to get a little spongy feeling when the lever is squeezed. There a couple bubbles in the window of the master cylander. Can I simply top off with some DOT 4 fluid or do I need to do a complete bleed and fluid replacement?

Thanks

You can try taking the top off the res, squeeze the brake lever SLOWLY, and tape or zip tie the brake lever to the grip over night and see if the air moves out. Then top it off if need be.

Check all the joints to make sure that they are not leaking.

silly comment / question... but are your brake pads worn? the only time I see air in my master cylinder is when my pads are worn down... when you replace your pads you squeeze the fluid from the brake calipers back into the master cylinder ... if you've added fluid.. this will cause it to over flow ...unless you follow the theory that you bleed off this fluid and replace it with new... in that case it doesn't matter.... ~Guido

Thanks guys,

Doc, I checked all the joints, no leaks.

You can try taking the top off the res, squeeze the brake lever SLOWLY, and tape or zip tie the brake lever to the grip over night and see if the air moves out. Then top it off if need be.

Musky, is this the only way to top off the res? I figured the air would just be replaced when fluid was added.

Is this a typical way to handle a spongy brake line or is the standard procedure to bleed and re-fill?

Thanks

If you have air in the res you might have air in your lines. Tieing the brake handle back sometimes let the air rise to the top so you don't need to bleed the brakes. Did you check your pads like davehrn suggested? Bleeding the brakes can be slow. The same old pump, open, close, top off, pump.... as any other brakes. some people get some sort of power bleeder.

You can take the top off and add fluid.

However, the question arises ..... where did the air come from and the fluid go.

If the brakes feel spongy then you will need to get the air out of the system .... bleed the brakes.
