AIS Removal - issues? 8 Months, 1 Week ago
Another member mentioned something in another post that I was thinking about asking anyway, so:

I removed my AIS about two weeks ago (2005 Silverado, completely stock). I noticed that when I pull out the enricher and start it up in the morning, that the engine RPM does not seem to be increasing as much as it used to as the bike warms up. It runs OK, though, once warmed up. I also think I will get fewer miles out of this last tank of gas.

Has anyone else noticed this as well? If so, is there anything I can or even should do?

The only way I can think of that the AIS would affect anything is if you didn't get everything sealed up well. It really doesn't have anything to do with the running or mpg. Or I could be completely wrong again

If you used the original gaskets when you installed the port covers, and plugged the intake manifold vacuum port securely, and everything is tight...since it deals with exhaust only, it shouldn't affect your mileage. If you have an exhaust leak or vacuum leak, well...then maybe. I'm no guru by any means, Soba. Just adding my .02.

The air injection system is designed to introduce fresh air to the engine exhaust as it exits the exhaust manifold. Exhaust gases are at their hottest as they leave the combustion chambers. Introducing fresh oxygen to the exhaust at this point allows continued burning of the fuel mixture as it travels down the exhaust system and ultimately out the tailpipe.

The AIS comes into play on the exhaust side is not connected to the carb except by one vacuum line. It 'injects' some fresh air into the exhaust side to reduce hydrocarbon emissions to meet EPA requirements.

The original vacuum port connection is where you should look in resolving any problems you have .... such as possible air leaks, on which the previous posters have commented.

OK, I'll check it out. You're talking about the vacuum line that goes into the intake manifold, right? I put the cap and clamp on it, but maybe there's a leak. What the heck, It's do much fun taking the tank off.

That's correct.

You would be surprised how many people think there no way it would leak there.

That's the one. Who knows? Maybe the vibration's caused it to slip or something.

DOH! Doc's fingers are faster than my aging ones.
