Guaging RPMs without tach. 2 Years, 4 Months ago
I have an 04 RoadStar with stock gearing. Is there a chart that will tell me what my RPMs are at various speeds in each gear? A tach is way down the list of things I NEED, MUST HAVE, DROOL OVER,etc. but it would be nice to know where in the rpm range I am riding. Thanks guys.

Hey ekonkjack.

I have an 05 with a tach on it and stock gearing. Give me some gears and speeds you'd like to know what RPMs you're running, and I'll help you build a table of your own.

http://www.650ccnd.com/perf.htm

This is a site I used to determine the RPM's on my 650. Just change the gear ratio, primary reduction and secondary reduction. You can get this informantion in your manual.

As far as I'm concerned........idle. lol.

I shift into second at about 25 mph, which puts me at about 2600 rpm. By that, I would guess 13 mph to be somewhere around 1300 rpm. I can double check it on my way home this evening if you want.

BlkCherry

If you remember. If not no big deal. When I got my bike back from it's 600 mile service that's the speed it idled at and they were trying to tell me that it was set at the recommended 900 RPM. Yeah, Right. I'm slow but I ain't stupid. I'm just curious. But not curious enough to get a tach.

Thanks

Musky,

I sure doubt its set at 900 rpm. If I chug my bike in 1st with no throttle letting the motor move it, my bike goes maybe 5 mph. I'll get you a true number once I hop on it to go home.

Musky,

At 13 mph my engine is turning a steady 1500 rpm. I'd say your idle is set a wee bit too high.

HOLY CRAP!! Another good reason to avoid dealers. I turned my idle down as soon as I left the dealer. It was a while ago but I haven't run into anyone with a tach on a 1700. Thanks man!

No problem my friend. I don't trust dealers anymore either.
